FanBolt’s DVD Picks For Mother’s Day!

Looking for the ultimate DVD sets for Mother’s Day? We have the perfect ones for you! Lionsgate has recently released 3 4-film collections of our favorite actresses including Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, and Renee Zellweger!

Here’s the breakdown of the collections…

Gwyneth Paltrow: 4-Film Collection
Shakespeare In Love
Emma
Bounce
View From The Top

This is my personal favorite collection of the 3 sets. Shakespeare In Love and Emma are two of my all time favorite films (being the hopeless romantic that I am). This collection is all about love – and perfect collection to share with your mom on Mother’s Day! Here’s the breakdown:

Anchored by the film for which she won the Oscar®, the Gwyneth Paltrow: 4-Film Collection includes Shakespeare in Love, A View From the Top, Bounce and Emma. In Shakespeare in Love, Paltrow portrays the lovely Lady Viola, who finds herself entangled in a secret romance with Will Shakespeare. In the romantic comedy, View From the Top, the actress pairs with Christina Applegate (TV’s “Up All Night”) and Kelly Preston (Jerry Maguire) as a small-town girl who gets a taste of the big time world when setting her sights on becoming a first-class flight attendant. The final two films of the collection feature Paltrow as a grieving widow (in the drama, Bounce) with Ben Affleck, and the title character in the adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel, Emma.

Nicole Kidman: 4-Film Collection
Cold Mountain
Rabbit Hole
The Others
Dogville

Nicole Kidman is one of the finest actresses in Hollywood. With a diverse body of work under her belt, this collection offers a good variety of her finest roles. If your mother is the more adventurist type/ true movie lover, then this is probably the collection you want to go with (After all it has a horror movie in with it to top it all off!). Our only complaint here is that Moulin Rouge! isn’t included – as it’s our favorite film starring Nicole. Here’s the full description below.

One of the most versatile actresses in Hollywood, Nicole Kidman has an impressive body of work, including three Oscar® nominations**, and one win for The Hours. The Nicole Kidman: 4-Film Collection includes the acclaimed titles, Rabbit Hole, Cold Mountain, The Others and Dogville. Based on the popular play, Rabbit Hole features Kidman as Becca, a wife and mother whose life has been unhinged by a tragic accident. Cold Mountain, set in the Civil War, follows the story of Ada, who vows to wait for her love after he’s left her to fight as part of the Confederate Army. In The Others, Kidman portrays a mother of two photosensitive children when they become convinced that their home is haunted. And in the drama, Dogville, Kidman is a woman who finds refuge from the mob in a small Colorado town.

**Best Actress in a Leading Role, Moulin Rouge!, 2001; Best Actress in a Leading Role, The Hours, 2002; Best Actress in a Leading Role, Rabbit Hole, 2010

Renee Zellweger: 4-Film Collection
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Chicago
Cold Mountain
New In Town

My major bone to pick with the Renee and Nicole sets is that they both include Cold Mountain – so if you pick up all 3 of these sets, then you get the same movie twice. That being said, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago are two of the best movies in this collection – and two that should be in every woman’s DVD collection. Here’s the description for the set:

Another three-time Oscar® nominated*** actress with one win in 2003, Renée Zellweger brings something unique to every performance. The Renée Zellweger: 4-Film Collection features four such performances in Bridget Jones’s Diary, Chicago, Cold Mountain and New in Town. In her first nominated role, Zellweger stars as the determined but lovelorn title character, Bridget Jones. As starlet murderer Roxie Hart, Zellweger lights up the screen alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones in the Broadway musical turned film, Chicago. In Cold Mountain, the actress co-stars with Kidman in the Civil War drama. Finally, Zellweger returns to her comedic roots to star in the fish-out-of-water romantic comedy, New in Town.

***Best Actress in a Leading Role, Bridget Jones’s Diary, 2001; Best Actress in a Leading Role, Chicago, 2002; Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Cold Mountain, 2003

It can be hard finding the perfect gift for mom and dad, but we find that movies are pretty much always the safest way to go! We hope that this list has been of help to you – and we hope you and all the mothers out there have a fabulous Mother’s Day this upcoming Sunday!
