‘Harry Potter’ Spin-off Announced With J.K. Rowling At The Helm

The magical world Rowling created is coming back to the big screen in this Harry Potter spin-off, set 70 years before Harry’s story began.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows the adventures of Newt Scamander, a wizard in New York. Fans of the original books and movies may remember Scamander’s name from the Harry Potter series – he is the author of a textbook Harry is required to buy his first year at Hogwarts.

Warner Bros. announced the upcoming project this morning, which is said to be the first in an ongoing series. Although the movies will be stand alone as neither a prequel nor sequel, it’s been hinted that familiar creatures and characters will turn up.

“I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about,” Rowling says in a statement, “and this is it.” This will be the first screenplay Rowling has written.

  1. I think it’s a good compromise for everyone who’s vying for a continuation of the Harry Potter franchise. I’m excited to see what she does with the story and I look forward to seeing where it takes the series as a whole.
