For years, people have been trying to figure out how to adapt Neil Gaiman’s iconic DC/Vertigo comic book series The Sandman to a film. The seventy-five issue series, which ran from 1989 to 1996, has long been targeted by Warner Bros. for a film due to its cinematic qualities, deep mythology and rabid fanbase. Efforts to adapt the project have proven fruitless to the point of embarrassing up until now; one famous story involved producer Jon Peters trying to turn it into a superhero-like slugfest between the Sandman and the Corinthian.

Finally though, it appears as if a film version is getting off the ground. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has confirmed via Twitter a deal with with Warner Bros. to star in a film version of the story, as well as direct. The script will be written by David Goyer.

The comic book focuses on Dream, the allegorical personification of dreams, who is one of the Endless. His six brothers and sisters–Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny–are all their own personifications and hold incredible power. Throughout the course of the series Dream deals with his siblings, deities, mortals and even the Furies of Greek myth.
