DVD Review: Nancy Drew

With her magnifying glass and fingerprint powder in hand Nancy Drew leaves River Heights for La-La-Land…but not to meet that guy on Smallville as her boyfriend Ned fears. No she’s out to solve one of the greatest mysteries ever: the death of movie star Dehlia Draycott. But the bigger mystery is how our perky plaid-clad sleuth will fit in with the text-messaging teen queens of mean she meets at Hollywood High.

Review:
Nancy Drew certainly isn’t a newcomer, as she has been the main star of her own book series for years. Most girls grew up reading about her mysteries and enjoying TV shows of a similar premise. Veronica Mars anyone?

I was more than delighted when I heard that Warner Brothers was releasing this film, and who better to star as Nancy Drew than the fresh face of Emma Roberts, niece of the fantastic Julia Roberts.

This movie is definitely a change of pace from the typical Hollywood film. It’s a family film, no harsh language, no raunchy scenes, just quality entertainment at its best. The dialog is clever and honestly it reminds me of older movies, classics even. The movie is surprisingly well done and fans of the original books will be pleasantly surprised with how this film unfolds.

There’s no case that Nancy can’t solve, and she’s ready for anything you can throw at her. Her dad, Carson, is a lawyer played by Tate Donovan. After Carson is relocated on assignment to Los Angeles, Nancy Drew finds herself in a city that has more than its share of cases for her to solve. Carson makes her promise to stop doing her sleuthing, and Nancy tries her hardest. But she just can’t help herself when she hears of a case involving actress Dehlia Draycott, who disappeared about 5 months back. When she came back, she was found dead in pool not even a week later. Her murder was never solved.

Nancy finds herself stumbling upon clues as to what happened, and her thoughts soon become consumed with what happened. Will she be able to solve the case? Check out the DVD to find out! Also, be sure to check out Nancy Drew: Drew’s Clues. This version of the film is complete with special clues that “pop” onto the screen informing the viewer of trivia and special behind-the-scenes secrets that let viewers test their own detective skills. It’s very cool in our books!
