DVD Review: The Heartbreak Kid

Big laughs head south of the border in the Farrelly Brothers’ newest twist on boy-meets-girl. When the single and indecisive Eddie (Ben Stiller) meets the sexy and beautiful Lila (Malin Akerman), the guy who could never pull the trigger jumps the gun. While honeymooning in Mexico, Eddie discovers he’s made a really big mistake. He soon meets Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), his real soul mate. But when the love of your life isn’t your wife, things can get quickly out of control. Now it will take some desperate measures to turn his honeymoon from hell into the perfect romantic getaway.

Review:
If you were a fan of There’s Something About Mary than this movie is definitely one you should check out. The humor is typical is Ben Stiller style, and the movie itself is packed with moments of awkwardness and uncalled for nudity that can only be described as outrageous. I found myself rolling my eyes after the second sex scene, which was clearly put in for the guys’ enjoyment.

Ben Stiller and the Farrelly brothers make a fab team and always seem to highlight the best qualities that the other has to offer in terms of comedy. Which is apparent if not by the viewer than by the success generated by their releases. The Heartbreak Kid made 110mill+ worldwide, and that number will only grow with the DVD having now been released.

While the movie does stray at points and seem a bit too crazy, it still provides for an entertaining viewing and a great movie night if paired with some laid back friends and a big bowl of popcorn. And if the movie itself isn’t enough for you, the special features are entertaining as well, and round out the release quite nicely. The deleted scenes were amusing but best left out of the film. There’s also a feature where Ben Stiller and his dad, Jerry Stiller, talk about what it was like being able to work together. It’s pretty cute and worth checking out as well as the Halloween party feature which would have been cooler if the cast of the movie had been able to take part.

All in all, cute release. It’s not a great film, but it has funny moments. Check it out if you’re a Ben Stiller fan.
