Titanic 3D DVD Review: Still The Epic Love Story You Remember

Fans flocked to theaters earlier this year to see the re-release of Titanic which commemorated the 100 anniversary of the 1912 disaster. The only change to the film? Well, now it’s in 3D. A needed effect? Not at all. It was however a good reason to re-release the film in theaters.

Nearly 6 months later, Titanic is on Blu-ray for the first time ever. This release features not only the film in 3D (though you’ll need a TV capable of displaying 3D to display this feature) and 2D – but also 2.5 hours of bonus material. From 30 deleted scenes to 60 behind-the-scenes featurettes (plus a number of brand new features such as “Reflections on Titanic” and “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron”), it’s a must-have for any fan of the film. It’s a definite upgrade from that VHS tape set that so many of fans purchased back in the late 90’s!

So many films don’t stand the test of time. Even after just a decade, you can go back and watch them and realize how hokey the effects were – or how bad the acting actually was. But that’s not the case with Titanic. 15 years later, and this film is still just as incredible as it was that first time we saw it in theaters thanks to James Cameron’s magical touch.

In case you aren’t familiar with the film, the storyline is simple. A boy and girl from different social backgrounds meet and fall in love on the Titanic. The boy is played by Leonardo DiCaprio. It was actually this film that made him a household name – and the star on the cover of every teen magazine. However, DiCaprio wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for his work in the film as his leading lady, Kate Winslet, was. This film was also Winslet’s introduction into the Hollywood mainstream. With an Oscar nomination under her belt in 1998, she found no shortage of work coming her way. Both Winslet and DiCaprio have gone on to have incredible careers as A-list actors – undoubtedly in part because their work on Titanic.

Titanic tells one of the most haunting love stories that Hollywood has ever brought to the big screen. Pair that with stunning visual effects, great actors, and one of the most epic soundtracks of all time, and it’s not hard to see why it was time to bring this film back to theaters.

Bottom line, the Blu-ray release of Titanic is definitely a must-own for any fan of the film. Sure it’s in 3D too – if you’re a fan of the 3D craze, but it’s not even needed here. This film will always stand on its own.

  1. I remember seeing that on Twitter this spring when the movie was re-released… I can’t believe that today’s generation didn’t realize that it was a real event. Says something pretty horrific about our school systems…
