DVD Review: 30 Rock: Season 3

“30 Rock” stars Primetime Emmy , Golden Globe and SAG Award winner (and show creator) Tina Fey as Liz Lemon, show runner of the fictional variety series “TGS with Tracy Jordan;” Primetime Emmy , Golden Globe and SAG Award-winner Alec Baldwin as network executive Jack Donaghy; and Tracy Morgan as the unpredictable star of Lemon’s hit variety show, “TGS with Tracy Jordan.” Lemon constantly has her hands full juggling corporate interference from Donaghy and off-the-handle star antics from Jordan, all while attempting to salvage her own personal life.

Review:
30 Rock fits in well on NBC’s Thursday night. The show is no stranger to acclaim from the critics – having won not only Golden Globes, but also Emmys. Infact the 3rd Season of the series was nominated for 22 Emmys last year – the most ever for a comedy series.

Being a hit with the critics didn’t instantly make this show a hit with the viewers – 30 Rock has been struggling for years with its ratings. Much like The Office the show does possess a unique form of humor – and if you don’t get it, you’re not going to see what makes this show so amazing. Perhaps the fact that the series isn’t mainstream enough is what has hampered the ratings in previous seasons, but the onslaught of awards recently have made it hard for people to not sit up and take notice.

Knowing that Tina Fey is not only the creator of the series but also a writer may make you think that you’re instore for some Saturday Night Live less-than-laugable humor. But Fey has done an outstanding job with this series creating characters that are relatable, hatable, loveable, and memorable. While the complete cast does a wonderful job, the real stars here are Tina Fey as Liz Lemon and Alex Baldwin as Jack Donaghy. The wit, the sacrasim, the inside jokes… wouldn’t work with any other actors. While Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) may drive you insane as a selfish attention needy actor, the charm of Kenneth Pracell (Jack McBrayer) will help calm you. It’s a superb cast paired with superb writing.

Bonus features include deleted scenes, commentary, a number of featurettes, and a photo gallery. If you haven’t checked out the series already – now is the time before the 4th Season starts back this October. Don’t let this one slip by.
