DVD Review: Psych

PSYCH, USA Network’s hit original series starring James Roday (“The Dukes of Hazzard”), Dule Hill (“The West Wing”) and Corbin Bernsen (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” “L.A. Law”), will kick off its third season with all new cases on USA Network on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 10/9c.

Review:
The simple yet witty drama known as PSYCH is no exception to the series that USA Network continues to impress us with. PSYCH follows the adventures of police consultant Shawn Spencer (James Roday). Spencer is extremely observant, and he manages to solve crimes with such ease that the precinct detectives actually believe that he’s a psychic, a theory that is nothing but encouraged by Spencer. Best friend, Gus (Dule Hill) is a bit of a reluctant sidekick, yet he still aids in the cases and proves to be a character who is a bit more grounded in reality.

The third season premiere “Ghosts,” we meet Shawn’s (Roday) mother, Madeleine, played by Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominated TV legend Cybill Shepherd. Madeleine, a criminal psychologist, returns to Santa Barbara to help the SBPD with a case much to the surprise of her son and ex-husband Henry (Bernsen). We also see the Spencer family focus with the dysfunction of Madeleine and Henry’s divorce as Shawn deals with the two of them back in his life. The PSYCH agency is on the case of a ghost in the home of Gus’ boss.

This series takes a couple episodes to grow on. After a few viewings, you’ll find yourself impressed and humored with the simplicity and comedic genius of the series.
