The Secret Life Of An American Teenager DVD Review: Wedding Bells?

We’ve come a long way since the first volume of The Secret Life Of The American Teenager, but we’re still dealing with some of the most basic teenage issues. While, hopefully, pregnancy isn’t one of the more basic problems for teenagers today (though something certainly seems to be in the water with this series as we discover Adrian is also pregnant this season)- jealously certainly is. When Ben and Adrian decide to tie the knot, Amy tries her hardest to pressure Ricky (her baby’s dad) into a similar commitment.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the series, The Secret Life Of The American Teenager tells the story of Amy Juergens, a 16-year-old who gets pregnant and has to deal with the consequences. This season, there is another pregnancy in the works – Adrian is pregnant with Ben’s baby, and wedding bells are about to chime.

Somehow this show always sucks me in (as most of ABC’s family shows do – they just make great guilty pleasure shows), and it’s definitely not the acting. Once you’ve watched a few episodes, it’s a little less noticeable – but when you first start out, it’s the first thing you notice. I think part of what intrigues me about this series is that it’s not your typical portrayal of being a teenage mom. Thanks to the trashy reality series on MTV depicting teenage motherhood – The Secret Life is a refreshing look at an average teenager who is having to deal with this unexpected event. The Secret Life handles the topic of teenage pregnancy and motherhood much more responsibly than I’ve seen with other shows before. It doesn’t glamorize it. It shows a realistic look into what it would be like and the challenges it presents.

My main complaint with this release is that I hate it when TV shows split up the seasons into “volumes.” This is Volume 6 – but we’re on the third season. I rather just have the complete third season. But if you can look past the ploy by ABC Family to get you to buy 2 DVDs per season, and you’re a fan – then it’s definitely worth it.
