‘The Vampire Diaries’ Review: The End of the Affair

Oh. My. Klaus. Can we all just take a moment to praise the phenomenal performances last night on The Vampire Diaries? Paul Wesley and Candice Accola, I can’t even begin to explain how amazing they were! Not only them, but the whole cast held their fort.

Last night’s episode consisted of many things. Usually, I don’t care too much for the episodes holding an excessive amount of information, but this episode held my interest the entire time! From Katherine (Nina Dobrev) making an appearance, to Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) bromance, last night’s episode was by far my favorite to date.

Road trip:
Don’t you love a good road trip? Especially if that road trip consists of finding your murderous ex! This dangerous adventure was brought to you by the fabulous Katherine Peirce. I’ve been wondering what Katherine’s been up to, turns out that she’s drinking Klaus-free margaritas, while keeping a close eye on Klaus and Stefan. Oddly, instead of keeping the information to herself, she does the selfless thing and shares it with Damon (Ian Somerhalder). This leads Damon to sneaking into Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) room, and telling her to pack… Red underwear. Ow, my ears hurt from all of the Delena fans screaming in joy.

When I take road trips, I usually listen to music. Damon on the other hand would rather read Stefan’s diary.

“‘March 12th, 1922. I’ve black out days. I wake up in stranger’s blood, places I don’t recognize, with women I don’t remember.’ *Gasp* I’m shocked! Stefan’s not a virgin?” -Damon Salvatore

This is one of the many reasons why I adore Damon. Oh, how I would LOVE to go on a road trip with him!

The Roaring Twenties:
Or should we call it the ‘ripping twenties’? I honestly don’t even know where to begin! So much information, so much epicness. We first see a dashing Stefan in the back of a car… With a woman. My first thought? Myself wishing that I was that woman. After a few seconds, though, the woman is dead. Is it bad that I still envied that girl?

Apparently, Stefan was quite the charmer. (Given) As he walked into the bar, he was greeted by the owner, Gloria (Enisha Brewster), and a very mysterious lady named Rebecca (Claire Holt), who is later revealed to be Klaus’s sister. This is where it starts to get confusing.

It is revealed that Klaus and Stefan actually knew each other before. In fact, they were like brothers, rather than Stefan believing that Klaus is a ‘hybrid dick.’ The best part of this setup, is the irony that falls with it. We all thought that Klaus was the big-bad, but Stefan actually gave Klaus a few ideas in the good ole days. (Like getting a human man to drink his wife’s blood. Ew.) Rebecca actually starts falling for Stefan, but that is put to an abrupt stop when they are attacked at the bar. It turns out that even Klaus was running from someone. He hits the road, but not before compelling Stefan to forget him and his sister. Though, his sister had other plans. She wanted to run off with Stefan. This leads Klaus to killing her, and the rest is TVD history.

The Windy City:
It’s official. The beautiful city of Chicago has been infested with the most badass vampires around. Stefan and Klaus (along with his hoarded dead family) arrive at Gloria’s bar, trying to find an answer as to why Klaus couldn’t properly make hybrids. (As if they’re some kind of pastry.) Meanwhile, Damon and Elena arrive at Stefan’s old apartment. It’s pretty gross. Once Damon leaves out, Klaus and Stefan come in. Luckily, Klaus doesn’t see Elena… But Stefan does. I started to cry when they were looking at each other. Paul Wesley can give one look, and I’ll burst into tears. True story.

Daddy Issues:
Issues is an understatement when you’re talking about Caroline (Candice Accola) and her father. It’s obvious that he has a deep hatred for vampires, but he took it to a whole new level during last night’s episode. He tried to ‘fix’ her, and fixing her isn’t easy. It requires burning her in the sun and filling her lungs with vervain. He’s trying to make the thought of blood repulsive to her. I HATE Daddy Forbes. The really horrible part is, he thinks what he did was right. He would have killed his own daughter if Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) hadn’t had been there to stop him. All I can say is, poor Caroline.

Reunited:
Caroline was reunited with her father, Stefan was reunited with Elena, Klaus was reunited with Rebecca. One thing that all of these have in common, is the fact that not one of them goes well. When Elena gets Stefan alone, she thinks that she’ll be able to convince him to go back (Vervain in hand), sadly he has something else to say.
“It’s done. That part of my life is done. I don’t want to see you. I don’t want to be with you. I just want you to go.” -Stefan

Tears.

When Klaus and Rebecca are reunited, she stakes him. Of course it won’t kill him, but it’s worth a try. After about two minutes she forgives him for killing her. I mean, I would too if he brought me Paul Wesley. Klaus immediately gets down to business. He needs Rebecca’s help contacting the original witch, only she can’t. In order to contact the original witch, she needs her necklace, which just so happens to be the vervain necklace that Stefan gave to Elena.
Uh. Oh.

One thing that I must say, we see another glimpse of Klaus’s humanity. When he killed his sister, you could see the hurt in his eyes. It’s obvious that Rebecca was the only person Klaus could count on. The only one that didn’t see him as an ‘abomination,’ and she turned her back on him. In his world, it’s killed or be killed. He has to look out for himself, that’s all he’s ever been taught to do.

I’m absolutely amazed by last night’s episode. It provided a great-deal of information, but managed to hold my attention the entire time. “The End of the Affair” is my new favorite episode of TVD. Julie Plec, you are flawless.

Rating: A++++++

  1. love rebecca and ripper stefan and klaus relationships. so looking forward to seeing more of them together. the only thing bothered me was 1- where was alaric during the delena road trip? and 2-i felt kinda jipped on the caroline rescue. we know tyler went to the sheriff for help in finding her. but how did she know where to find them? and how long did it take for them to get to that location? (was that the first place they looked?)

  2. My favorite moment was Elena waking up to Damon in her bed!! But, that is a tough question for this episode which was SOOO good all the way thru!! I think that I am going to like Rebecca, she seems fun! We will see if she turns out to be likable. I prefer Ripper Stefan. I think he is boring, and cries WAY too much when he is being a good guy… Loved the Caroline scenes!! Go Sheriff Forbes, and boyfriend Tyler!! They rescued our girl from mean ole Daddy!! The clothes, scenery and jazz music made this one of my all time favorite episodes to date!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!
