‘Pretty Little Liars’ Review: The First Secret

Halloween is extremely close, and if last night’s episode of Pretty Little Liars didn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will. A lot of secrets came out, and many things were explained. In past episodes of PLL, we’ve seen glimpses of Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) true personality, as well as others perception of her, but during ‘The First Secret,’ we get the chance to dig deeper into her life and the reason why someone would want to kill her.

October 28th, 2008– The day that started it all.

First off, I need to state my thoughts on the first two minutes. One, Alison is, for lack of a better word, creepy. The episode begins with her telling a scary story to a little kid, and it definitely had me wondering if that story was foreshadowing an event. Secondly, Hanna (Ashley Benson) — It kind of looked like they stuffed a pillow under her chest. I had to say it. Lastly, Noel Khan (Brant Daugherty) is still extremely attractive. That is all.

Seeing as it’s almost Halloween in Rosewood, of course people would be doing some last minute shopping. While Ali is searching for a Halloween costume, she bumps into a not blind Jenna (Tammin Sursok), who’s family moved in with Toby’s (Keegan Allen) that same day. Not only that, but she also receives her first threatening text message. Uh oh.

One thing that I loved about last night’s episode was the fact that it had all of my old favorite characters. One example being Ian (Ryan Merriman). I hated the character, but like everyone on PLL, he was extremely attractive. On another note, can I just fangirl for a few moments? While Aria (Lucy hale) walked to her dad’s office, she bumped into Ezra (Ian Harding)! I’ll admit, I did rewind this a few times.

It’s obvious that Ali’s not having a great few days. First, she gets a threatening text, and then she gets a threatening voodoo doll with a note on the back.

“It’s my turn to torture you.”

Awkward.

By the way, we finally know what the deal was with those dolls! It just makes you wonder how many other things Ali could have hid.

Okay, this has to be said. Ali was a HUGE bitch.

“One day she’ll get what’s coming to her.” -Lucas (Brendan Robinson)

Double awkward.

It’s party time, and I watch enough TV to know that special events always go wrong somehow. This is no exception. Before the party’s even over, Ali manages to terrorize each of the little liars. Twice.

During the party, Ali disappears. The little liars receive a text from Ali telling them to come to an old, abandoned house… Alone. Scary movie rule #1: Never go anywhere alone! Apparently, no one explained to Ali the rules of survival for scary movies. Right when the liars find her, she decides to go outside the door. This results in an epic masked-creeper VS. Lady Gaga showdown! Long story short, it was all a prank. Okay, how is it possible for this girl to have friends? Really.

In the last few minutes of this insanely great episode, it is revealed that the person attacking Ali… Was seriously attacking her. She thought it was Noel, but it turns out that he never got the chance to head over there.

“Wondering who I am? You’ll find out soon enough” -A

And so it began.

This was by far my favorite episode. The performances in last night’s episode were phenomenal, and it really explained how everything came to be. One thing’s for sure, nothing at all on this show is coincidental. I’m even more excited for the backend of season two now! Can it be January yet?
