‘The Lying Game’ Review: Dead Man Talking

Oh. My. Lying Game! Please excuse me while I pick up my jaw from the floor! I have to say, that was one hell of an episode! When you thought the Sutton/Ethan/Emma love triangle couldn’t get anymore complicated. A dead body, another switch, and midterms to top it all off? ‘Dead Man Talking’ had to be one of the most interesting episodes to date.

1. Laurel (Allie Gonino):

“What makes no sense is that you are still with Justin (Randy Wayne). You really trust him after all that he did?” Sutton (Alexandra Chando)

Laurel seems to be turning into a mini-Sutton. Seeing as her family doesn’t approve of Justin, Laurel decides to lie to her parents. She claims that Justin and her are over, while in reality, they’re still seeing each other (Only in school). Kind of like a modern day Romeo and Juliet, but that didn’t end so well, did it? But what Romeo and Juliet didn’t have was an open-mic event that could potentially be the end of Laurel’s relationship with Justin. I’m calling it right now, Baz (Adam Brooks), the boy who asks Laurel to join his band, is going to throw a wrench in their relationship. How much more can it take? After all the lies and deception, a hot boy with a guitar has to be the breaking point. Justin is amazing, and he has really beautiful eyes, but I’m pretty sure he’s going to have some competition for Laurel’s heart in the near future.

2. Family Moment:

“Look, I know I can be difficult sometimes, but I care about you guys so much. I am so lucky to have you as my parents. I’m sorry.” -Emma

I had to mention this. It was just a small scene, but it really showed how much Emma cared for Ted (Andy Buckley) and Kristin (Helen Slater). The Lying Game has done so much to differentiate Emma and Sutton from each other, and this one moment showed more of a difference than any other moment throughout the season. Plus, the acting was superb. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

3. Rebecca and Alec:

“It’s kind of a thrill to be back, and turning heads.” -Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter)

Best duo ever? I think so. From Alec (Adrian Pasdar) being the head man in charge, to Rebecca being the seemingly sweet woman with a lot of secrets… Emma and Ethan (Blair Redford) may take the crown as best couple, but Alec and Rebecca are the most interesting. What makes them that much more exciting is the fact that Alec, the one who is usually two-steps ahead, is trailing behind Rebecca. I mean, it’s obvious that she has an ulterior motive, possibly revenge for whatever happened in high school? What ever the motive may be, the fact that she’s trying to get close to Mads (Alice Greczyn), and that she was looking at engagement rings? Not. Good.

4. Derek:

“It didn’t go down like it was supposed to, okay? I didn’t want to hurt you, I was just supposed to take you to a parking lot. But you freaked out, and the car went over. When I saw you in school, that you were okay…” -Derek (Ben Elliott)

We finally figured out who caused the crash that almost killed Sutton! Honestly, I kind of suspected it, especially after the way he had been acting around Emma. This whole revelation didn’t shock me; what did shock me was Derek’s fate by the end of the episode. After a rough confrontation with Ethan, Derek somehow ended up dead. Why do all the attractive ones have to go? And who killed Derek?

5. The Switch (Again):

“She’s doing it so that she can prove yet again that she’s better at being me than I am.” -Sutton

One minute Sutton is Sutton, then Sutton is Emma, Emma is Sutton, Sutton is Emma, Sutton’s in hiding, Emma’s in hiding, and finally… Emma is Sutton, and Sutton is running off with Ethan. Does your head hurt? Because mine does.

Seeing as it’s midterm week, Emma took it upon herself to switch with Sutton. Now, in that short time period of Emma taking over, she managed to fix (only to ruin again) a lot of the relationships that Sutton had messed up in the previous episode. After the whole Derek situation, Ethan tries to leave with Emma. Just as they’re about to get away, Emma breaks her heel. Sigh. Girl problems. This results in Ethan having to leave Emma, and take Sutton with him instead. This begs the questions: What will happen to our favorite couple now, and seeing as Ethan can’t come back until the true killer is found… How long will this switch be?

Okay, so I think I made it pretty clear that I LOVED this episode. The problem that I’ve been having with TV lately, is the fact that it hasn’t been keeping my interest. Last night’s episode of The Lying Game definitely held it. It raised questions, theories, and had me in shock! The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that TLG had such a huge cliffhanger in the last episode, with Rebecca knowing Annie, and Annie not being the birth mother– This episode pretty much threw it out. I have a lot of faith that they’ll come back to these plot devices, but the little mention they had during this episode had me pretty upset! Like everyone, I just want to know what happens! Can it be next Monday already?
