‘The Vampire Diaries’ Review: Heart of Darkness

Can you hear that? That’s the sound of squeals from Damon and Elena shippers everywhere! After an unbearable hiatus, The Vampire Diaries is back and it’s still as epic as ever. My thoughts are honestly a jumbled mess! Between the major ‘Delena’ action, the various reappearances of our favorite characters, and Stefan’s badass side, I think it’s safe to say that we’re finally gearing towards the season finale. Only a few weeks left, and it’s bound to be shocking.

Following the previous episode, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Elena (Nina Dobrev), and Stefan (Paul Wesley) are on the hunt to find the vampire that originated their bloodline and the remaining stake that could possibly end Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) life. As Damon and Elena set off to Denver to get Jeremy (Steven McQueen) to work his ghost whispering powers, Stefan is stuck trying to bring out Alaric’s alter ego, and let’s just say it gets a bit messy.

“It’s not just that she makes him a better person, and she does, but he changes her too. Damon challenges her, surprises her, he makes her question her life, beliefs. Stefan is different, his love is pure, and he’ll always be good for her. Damon is either the best thing for her or the worst.” -Rose (Lauren Cohan)

Elena and Damon take a trip to see Jeremy in hopes of finding the vampire who originated their bloodline. Once Jeremy contacted Rose, we come to discover that a vampire named Mary was the one to turn Rose. They are unaware of her location, so they are left to wait while Rose investigates. What is the best thing to do while waiting? Well, nothing other than staring deeply into your lover’s eyes, holding hands, and making out. Insert massive fangirl scream! Sadly, Jeremy interrupts. Sigh. It was amazing while it lasted. Nonetheless, the gang went off to find Mary, but was ultimately disappointed. They shouldn’t be surprised, when was the last time something went RIGHT for them? Kol (Nate Buzolic) joins the party, kills Scary Mary, and breaks a few bones before leaving. Score 1,000 for Team Originals, Score 0 for Team Salvatore.

“I’ve been fighting that part of myself, thinking that if I repressed it, it would go away… But it won’t. And now that I’ve accepted it, it can’t control me. And neither can you [Klaus].” -Stefan

Stefan and Alaric are battling their inner demons. As Stefan and Klaus try to find a way to get Alaric’s alter ego to fess up about the stake, Stefan comes to the realization of his situation. I personally loved this part of the episode. Not only did we get to see Stefan’s badass side, but we also got a chance to see Alaric’s. Honestly? Although Damon and Elena’s kiss was beyond epic, Paul and Matt Davis’ acting during this episode was flawless. Amazing work.

Lastly, the cliffhanger! Esther comes to visit Rebekah (Claire Holt), bringing news that she’s dying. Without Abby (Persia White), her connection to life was breaking. After explaining her reasoning for wanting her children dead, she dramatically dies. Now, I didn’t buy it. It was too abrupt, and it just didn’t seem real. I was right. In the last few minutes, it is revealed that Esther had taken over Rebekah’s body, and is planning on killing the Original family. Cue dramatic music.

Thoughts and Sidenotes:

Esther is a life ruiner.

I don’t understand why everyone is so hellbent on killing the Originals? What exactly are they doing differently from any other vampire. Yes, Klaus uses Elena as a walking blood bag, but he also ensures her safety. I just don’t see the justification in it.

If Jeremy was able to contact Rose just because Damon knew her, why couldn’t he just contact Scary Mary aswell? They give up without even suggesting the idea? What?!

The Damon and Elena scene was perfect. PERFECT. The side glances, to the subtle touches. The build up was amazing. That is what I call great writing!

Florence + the Machine’s “Never Let Me Go”… Perfect song choice for the Delena scene. A+

TYLER’S BACK!

Tyler and Caroline. I have to say, I love Caroline with Klaus, but I also love her with Tyler! But the fact that he got angry with her over a drawing? Unrealistic. He didn’t even know the whole story, and he blows up.

Kol and Jeremy future BFFs? Probably won’t happen, but I’m going to keep the dream alive!

Shirtless Damon! WOO!

Matt (Zach Roerig) and Rebekah’s scene was the sweetest. In all honesty, I want Rebekah to find love, and I think she deserves a sweet guy like Matt. I approve.

Paul Wesley is flawless.

This was probably one of the best episodes of the season. There’s not much more I can say. I loved it, and I’m SO excited to see what happens next!
