‘Once Upon A Time’ Review: An Apple Red as Blood

Can this show get anymore insane? I cannot describe the love I have for Once Upon A Time! The backstory, the twists, the love it makes us feel for the characters… It’s indescribable. I have to say, by the end of ‘An Apple Red as Blood,’ my jaw was on the floor! Regina (Lana Parilla) goes to new lengths to ensure that the curse will not be broken, and in the end, we get a taste of just how serious the saying, “all magic comes with a price,” is.

The Fairytale World:

“Your body will be your tomb, and you’ll be in there with nothing but dreams formed of your own regrets.” -Evil Queen

We finally get another piece of the very complex Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), and the Evil Queen story. In the Pilot, we met Prince and Snow right before their True Love’s kiss. Now, we get to see just how that story went into play. Charming, being captured by the King, was about to be beheaded, but the Evil Queen thought he could be put to better use. After persuading the King to put Charming in her custody, she slowly manipulates Snow into giving herself over. Oh, but not before an epic fight scene, and a mirror coming close to tongue marks. In the end, Snow realized that the only way to save Charming, was to give herself over for a ‘friendly’ talk. Bad idea. The Evil Queen convinces Snow to eat an apple that will trap her in dreams of only regret. She did all of this to save the people that she loves. It’s funny how we already know the jist of what will happen in the Fairytale World, but we’re always still surprised! In all honesty, the most surprised I’ve been was during the Hat Trick episode. I’m still very curious about that story.

Storybrooke:

“I’m sorry it had to come to this! You may not believe in the curse, or in me, but I believe in you!” Henry (Jared Gilmore)

The stakes are high in Storybrooke. Regina is hellbent on keeping this curse intact, and the only way to do so? To get rid of Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison). It was revealed in this episode that killing Emma is out of the question. Kill her, and the curse breaks. So what’s a psychotic bitch to do? Well, only call on another psychotic case. Jefferson (Sebastian Stan) is back! I’ll admit, I thought he had somehow made his way back to the Fairytale World after his huge throwdown with Emma and Mary Margaret. Apparently not, because the queen expressed her interest in his ‘special’ services. She asked him to make a trip back to the Fairytale World using his hat. Problem is, the hat requires magic, which is almost nonexistent in Storybrooke… Almost. They manage to scrape up enough magic to bring back one small item. None other than an apple. This small piece of magic just very well could cost Regina everything she cares about in Storybrooke. After a small fight with Emma over the curse, Henry takes it upon himself to show Emma of the magic, rather than tell. Resulting in his collapse. Now, Emma has no reason left to not believe, but what will she do with this new knowledge? I guess, even in Storybrooke, Regina can never, and will never, win.

I don’t remember the last time I actually disliked an episode of OUAT. It’s come a long way, and it set a high bar for other supernatural themed shows. Now, we’re down to the season finale, and I have no clue where this story will take us. It leaves many questions, and in the end, I’m almost positive that the finale will surely keep us on the edge of our seats. I’m nervous, to say the least.

  1. A bit off the story line…my favorite moment was checking out the decor in Regina’s home and wondering how they came to design it the way that they did for her. Guess I’ll head over to the show’s website to find that out. Well Henry can’t kiss a frog so Regina desperately needs to find some more magic…but where? And, by the way, how does Henry fit into Fairytale World? How did he come to know about and believe in the book? Who’s his daddy? How did Regina end up with him? Hmmmm…..
