David Cook has signed on to cover this season’s American Idol goodbye song…

The season seven champ recorded a cover of the band A Simple Mind’s hit single “Don’t You Forget About Me” [best known worldwide as the hit movie The Breakfast Club’s theme]
to play over the departing hopeful Idol contestants’ montage reels.

Though Cook’s version won’t make it’s Idol debut until next week, fans who pre-order his upcoming second album will have the option of previewing the song first on his official website this Thursday. The song will also be available on iTunes and other digital retailers Tuesday, March 8th.

Ruben Studdard was the first to contribute an Idol exit song (“Celebrate Me Home”), followed by Daughtry (“Home”) and Carrie Underwood, who covered Motley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home” two seasons ago.
