Is Lex Luthor The Best ‘Smallville’ Villain?

Clark Kent has encountered many villains throughout the run of Smallville, and as the series comes to an end and the complete series gets ready to be released on DVD – we wanted to take a look back at Clark’s most challenging rival. Throughout the series, Lex Luthor and Bizarro have been two of the most epic rivalries that we’ve witnessed. But we have to say that Lex Luthor will always be the number one villain in our book when it comes to Smallville.

Everyone is familiar with the Lex Luthor/Clark Kent rivalry, but Smallville goes into the history of their relationship. The second billionaire CEO of LuthorCorp, he struggles with a dark history of alienation and self-destruction and a sinister destiny of power and evil. One of the best episodes to demonstrate the rivalry between Clark and Lex was the first episode in Season 6 – Zod. In this episode, Lex’s body is overtaken by General Zod who is a Kryptonian military leader. He kidnaps Lana and of course Clark comes into save the day in a pretty epic battle between him and Lex/Zod. Only Lex gains the upper hand when Clark is commanded to his knees and told that if he joins forces with him – then he’ll spare the lives of those that Clark cares about most.

Michael Rosenbaum (Lex/Zod) was really great in this episode. His casually evil portrayal of Zod was very different than the conflicted Lex. Even though Lex isn’t truly Lex in this episode, we think it’s one of the great examples in the series, and we’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you agree?

  1. Yes Rosennaum’s Luthor is not only the greatest villain on the show but also the best thing about the show in general in my mind. I was really excited to hear that he’d be returning for the series finale but then they had to go and ruin it with some really cheap and badly executed writing. What a great way to make his entire journey on the show feel totally pointless writers.
