About The Game

I recently fought my way through Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 on the PlayStation Vita. A fighting game that features many different modes for you to play in and over 48 Marvel and Capcom characters for you to select from. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 presents you with both online and offline gameplay and new touch screen controls for you to use should you want to.

From the beginning you will be able to create your license card and select from a number of icons to set on your license card profile. You also have a large number of titles to choose from and unlock for your license card. These license cards will be seen online by other players when you fight them. It’s fun setting them up and I am sure a lot of people will enjoy going after the harder-to-get titles for them to use and show off when playing online.

You have different modes to choose from which includes your online and offline modes. In offline mode you can choose arcade, touch, training and mission modes. You also have Heroes and Heralds mode where you can choose between good and evil to fight with. You will also use combat enhancing cards that you will unlock and collect along the way. There are many of those cards for you to unlock and collect. Heroes and Heralds mode is certainly a mode I had fun with and I would expect the same for everyone else. There are many stages for you to choose from and you will also be able to unlock hidden stages. What makes the hidden stages tough is that if you lose before you beat the stage, it will be lost again until you unlock it once more. It’s certainly a fun mode to play in and you’ll have a good time collecting the cards.

When getting ready to fight, you will choose 3 characters to use. When selecting your characters, sometimes it’s good to pick 3 different fighting styles and at other times it’s good to just stay with similar fighting styles. As you play, you will start with your first selection, but at anytime you can switch out between the other two. You can also call them in for quick assists in helping you with the fight. That can create for some very nice combos during battle. You can also use special abilities, and that includes team abilities where your entire team will launch an assault. There are a lot of fun combinations that can be done that helps make the fighting a little bit more exciting.

Game play – AI – Controls

The gameplay handles very well and can be a lot of fun, especially when finding a character with the abilities that fit your fighting style the most. There is a character for everyone to use in this game that will play to your liking once you learn their maneuvers and abilities. I sometimes turned it into a button mashing fight, but once you learn the buttons it makes all the difference in your enjoyment of the game. You’ll select a team of 3 Marvel and/or Capcom characters to use as you fight your way through any of the gameplay modes.

There are different levels of difficulty for you to choose between, however, if you use the touch screen the difficulty is not nearly as hard. To go into more detail about the touch screen, it basically is a button mashing touch screen match. All you do is tap on the opponent throughout the entire match and use the bumpers to call in a team member to help. It can be fun for a bit to try out but it’s not really worthy of the game to play it that way.

Sound – Graphics

It does have a good soundtrack going for it with a lot of nice tunes throughout. Visually there is nothing to be desired, although a few of the backgrounds looked decent, it’s just not something that catches your eye as impressive. It’s very bland in the visual presentation of the game, though it does have a nice opening video.

Online – Multiplayer

Online mode is going to be a popular mode for those who really get into the fighting games. You have both your regular player and ranked matches to choose from. I’ve had a rough time online so far, though I am probably not the best fighter out there. I do think that it’s set up very nicely and is easily to navigate through. There was one match that I had a little bit of a lag issue, but it wasn’t much of a distraction in the gameplay and there has been no other anomaly outside of that one time. You can also play Heroes and Heralds mode online as well. So there are a lot of good online options available here.

Enjoyment Level – Fun Factor

I surprisingly enough still had a very good time with this title and found it to be time consuming. I am not always the biggest fan of fighting games, but this one certainly did keep my attention throughout. Many hours went by playing this game without me even noticing. Between the offline modes as well as the online modes, I had a great deal of fun. More so offline rather than online because I am simply not good enough at fighting games to play online.

Final Notes

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 has good menus and keeps track of a good amount of stats that will keep you very interested for a long time in this game. The battle stats alone will entice you to continue playing to improve on both your offline and online numbers. It’s very nice to see both your online and offline stats and to improve on them as you continue to pour hours into the game. This is a very solid fighting title for most anyone to enjoy and especially those who are fans of Marvel and Capcom.

I do have a complaint with this game. When navigating the menus I found the loading times to be a little bit longer than I like. I am sure most people can sit by the 5-10 seconds that they last, but if I actually noticed that, then they are a little bit longer or at least far to often than what they need to be.

Score: 7/10
