Wii U Anticipation: 23 Games On Launch Day Of Nintendo’s New Console

I’ve been anticipating the release of the Wii U for a long time now. I was intrigued by the Wii U when I first heard about it, but was sold when I had the opportunity to experience it first-hand this past January at CES 2012. The Wii U looks interesting from the outside, but I am sure, that for most of you, it is not enough to convince you to purchase it. But let me urge you to do one thing. Make sure you find an opportunity to get hands-on time with the console while playing some of the games that interest you. I can’t say that the results will be the same for you as it was for me, but when I experienced my first hands-on time with the Wii U it completely changed my opinion about the console.

I wasn’t able to play any of the announced games when I had my demo opportunity; I was only given the opportunity to play concept games. But when you get time to see the console in action and begin to understand what type of gameplay it can offer, it really becomes a fun thought. To me, I don’t only see it as a console that is fun for gamers, but also a console that is inspiring for developers. I can’t wait to see some of the initial games in action and to see how they used the Wii U GamePad functionality. This is something that will continue to be improved upon as more games are developed and released. Yes, I am hopeful and admit that I am hyped up with anticipation for the Wii U, but it’s only because I feel this console can offer a lot of enjoyment to all gamers. I absolutely can’t wait for the November 18th release date.

There are 23 games that will be released during the launch, with a number of games to follow right behind. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and COO was quoted in a release saying “We’re making sure that Wii U owners will have great games to play from the moment they open the box, and that a steady stream of fun new games is always on the way.” He also mentioned that they have something for everyone with new franchises and creative new approaches to those games that we are already familiar with. Let’s take a look at the games that will first arrive on the Wii U and what we have to look forward to.

Now let’s take a closer look at some of these games and what they have to offer. Also, I’ll be providing a lot more opinions and detail for specific games in the near future before launch. For now, I’ll leave you with this little preview and a lot of videos!

ZombiU
Ubisoft

ZombiU is a game that I think many people are looking forward to. I think each member of our FanBolt team is actually anticipating this game the most. This is also a game that uses an idea I thought of while playing one of the concept games – the sniper scope through the Wii U GamePad. So, I’m looking forward, with great anticipation, for ZombiU and can’t wait to play it this fall.

Assassin’s Creed III
Ubisoft

Ubisoft has a few games of interest, but Assassin’s Creed III is easily my most anticipated game. While yes, it is available on other consoles, I look forward to experiencing the game on the Nintendo Wii U. Its listed exclusive features aren’t anything to be overly impressed with at all, but I already like the ability to use the touch screen to change options instead of a pause menu. You will always know where your enemies are on the larger overhead map that’s available on the Wii U GamePad. You will also be able to quickly change your weapons without having to stop the on-screen action. I am sure I will have beaten the game before it releases on the Wii U, but I still look forward to comparing the experience.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Activision

I’ve always played Call of Duty on the Xbox 360 and it may be hard to get away from my shooters on the 360 controller. However, this will still be a good experience to have on the Wii U, especially if I really enjoy the Wii U Pro Controller. Although, I still look forward to using the GamePad’s features on this title as it allows you to view the multiplayer maps, call in score streaks and choose loadouts.

  1. I am not. This seems to be more of a gamers system, then a family system that the wii was. I just get that feeling by looking at the lineup of launch games.

Will this new system be backwards compatible?

  2. @beachdreaming It’s still Nintendo and they’ll want to continue to build on what they accomplished with the Wii. They’ll make sure to keep the family activities at a high level. There will be plenty of fun and simple family games available for the non-hardcore gamer to enjoy. Nintendo Land is a good fit for that category.
