Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation – A Worthy Attempt That Fans Could Enjoy

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation
Played On: PlayStation Vita
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Action/Adventure

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation features a lead female character by the name of Aveline. Set in 18th century New Orleans, she is fighting to free the slaves as mysterious disappearances start to become more frequent. That’s the basic rundown of the setting in which you will begin to play within. The city is interesting being a port town; you’ll spend a lot of time at the docks. Your surroundings are also interesting, though I must say, I am not a big fan of the swamp, and you’ll be spending time in the swamp. But hey, at least I got to kill an alligator!

I recently had the opportunity to play Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and wanted to be sure and write down a few thoughts before our review comes out a little bit later. These opinions are based on the first 4 sequences and will give you a decent look into the city and what the gameplay has to offer.

The setting in Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation is intriguing as you explore 18th century New Orleans. Some of the things you might expect from the region also come into play, such as dealing with a sense of voodoo early on in the game with one of the enemies. You’ll also meet a main character that will help you out with this voodoo guy and will give you poison darts to shoot at guards – some of which will kill them and others will cause them to go crazy. This alone creates an interesting experience with the use of those two items. I must also say that Aveline is a nice but strong lead character. I like the ability to change personas while doing different missions. You have the lady persona, the slave and assassin persona, each used in different ways and allowing for different gameplay abilities such as a charm by the lady persona. The only negative about the lady persona is that she can’t climb.

The city and its people are interesting and let me tell you more about that charm effect and its effectiveness. When you are dressed all pretty and walking on the docks, you’ll run into a group of guys who always seem to grab you and push you around, leading to a fight. This leaves you no choice but to kill them which then raises your chances of being noticed by guards, at least until you kill all witnesses to your killing of the bad guys. So, if you want to avoid having to track down witnesses and kill them, you can use your charm effect to have guards follow you. If anyone tries messing with you when a guard is following you, the guard will take care of them. It’s a nice little feature and I like it!

The gameplay feels as it should and handles fairly well, but it does come with a lot of issues. I feel that the game plays out fairly well, most of the time. However, you’ll come to realize that the control of your character is not as easy or smooth as you would hope, especially when climbing objects. But, it’s what you’ve probably come to expect from previous games, you just need to learn how to handle it properly. There are some moments, however, when you need to be quick that you will notice how annoying it can be.

The same goes for the combat. It handles really well at the best of times, but wow, it can be very buggy at other times. There will even be moments where you don’t see your enemy swinging at you, but all of a sudden you see your own blood fly as if you got cut and noticed that you did take damage. There are just moments that it really doesn’t seem to handle well, but when it works, it works good enough to please the player. One more very buggy thing I’ve noticed about the game is the sound. It’s absolutely horrific. I use my headphones while playing so it may be something that is more noticeable when using them, but it’s glitchy with both the music and the sound effects of battle.

I must say that if you are an Assassin’s Creed fan that you will probably find plenty to like about the game. It’s a good experience so far on the Vita, not nearly as great as the console version, but it does capture that sense of gameplay that we all expect. There are plenty of places to hide, plenty of ways to take down targets and plenty of fun to be had. So, no matter where you are playing, it’s fun to have Assassin’s Creed on the go with you and having the ability to take out 5 guards without alarming anyone.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation brings to you a full Assassin’s Creed experience for the first time on a handheld and so far, I’m enjoying the experience. But is it overly impressive and a must have? Well, you’ll have to keep an eye out for our full review in the coming days. If my beginning impressions leave you interested, then by all means, go check it out. It’s an enjoyable game that I am sure Assassin’s Creed fans will enjoy on the PlayStation Vita, but it does come with a few bugs. Hopefully those bugs will be fixed though.
