Playstation Plus Weekly Update: November 5th – 9th, 2012

Welcome to a new weekly series here on FanBolt, where we go over this week’s Playstation Plus goodies. We’ll take the Tuesday Playstation Store Update, break it down, and let you subscribers know what you should be on the lookout for!

Free Games

Late last year, Playstation began offering up full retail titles to Playstation Plus subscribers which culminated in the creation of the “Instant Game Collection” this summer. The collection is comprised of a dozen titles- some retail, some PSN- that can be instantly acquired by any new subscriber. Previously, there were only a pair of titles that changed each month. Now you’ll get the full twelve, with typically two to four of those rotating out and being replaced with new titles each month.

For November’s first update, we’re being treated to a new retail title in the collection- Resident Evil 5! This one is definitely worth downloading, perhaps even if you already own the game. What you’re getting here is the “Gold Edition”- all of the DLC is included at no extra cost. You get both “Lost In Nightmares” and “Desperate Escape”, the two extras scenarios beyond the main game, along with the Mercenaries Reunion mode and extra costumes for your characters. If you missed out on RE5 or never bought the DLC, this will be worth your while.

Some may be concerned that only one game was rotated out this month, but have no fear- PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX and Renegade Ops are scheduled to rotate out next week, so you can expect two more titles to take their place! If you haven’t “purchased” these games yet, do so now before you lose the chance! As of now, the Instant Game Collection is as follows (note that this is in order of most recent additions to oldest, and that the final three appear to be permanent additions);

The Instant Game Collection as of 11/6/12

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (NEW)
PAYDAY The Heist
The King of Fighters XIII
Double Dragon Neon
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game

BloodRayne: Betrayal
Renegade Ops (EXPIRING NEXT WEEK)
PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX (EXPIRING NEXT WEEK)
inFAMOUS 2
Littlebigplanet 2
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One

Discounts

Playstation Plus’ value comes not only from the free games, but also from the discounts on new content. This week, there are three games and one DLC pack receiving discounts. First up is Valve’s masterpiece, Portal 2 for only $13.99. It can be had on PC during the Steam Sales for much less, but this is less than half of what the PS3 version goes for at most online retailers. The new DLC for the game (“In Motion”) is also discounted 30% to $6.99. Be wary- this DLC requires you to own Playstation Move in order to play it. Bit of a shame that it is limited to those people- I’m itching to play it myself. Also a new release this week is Absolute Supercars, a racing game that can be played online with up to 16 players on over 20 tracks. It receives the same discount as the Portal 2 DLC.

When Vikings Attack is, again, a brand new release receiving a discount! The game is only $9.99, and PS+ subscribers can get it at $6.99, an absolute steal. What makes it even more of a steal is that it is a “Cross-Buy” game, meaning purchasing it once will get you both the PS3 and Vita versions. Our full review for the game will go live on this coming Tuesday. This discount does go away when the store updates that same day, so I’ll say that my initial impressions of the game are that it is awesome, hilarious, a fun time, and totally worth more than what they are asking. If it looks like your cup of tea, do not hesitate to get it at an insanely great price!

That about wraps it up for this week’s Playstation Plus goodies. Let us know in the comments if there is any other information you would like for us to include in these weekly updates. Until next time!
