‘Divergent’ Star Shailene Woodley Describes ‘Twilight’ Love Story as “Toxic”

Divergent star Shailene Woodley has spoken out against the hit film series Twilight, accusing producers of sending a damaging message about relationships to its legions of young fans.

Woodley worries the vampire franchise gives young viewers the impression that damaging relationships are desirable by glorifying main character Bella’s single-minded devotion to her undead boyfriend Edward.

She is adamant the movies portray a “toxic relationship” and she fears the main storyline makes teenage girls think it is fine to be totally dependent on a lover.

Woodley tells Teen Vogue magazine, “Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She (Bella) falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”

When we spoke with Woodley last week here in Atlanta, she said that she hoped one of the main messages that young fans take away from her new film Divergent is that relationships don’t have to be co-dependent. We’ll have our full interview with her coming next week!

We couldn’t agree more with Woodley.
