Russell Brand Speaks Out in Defense of Bieber

Justin Bieber’s most recently uncovered racist comments have earned him much controversy lately, and despite having issued a public apology on the matter, the scandal rages on. Some newly released videos from Bieber’s “One Less Lonely Girl” days depict the singer using the N-word and cracking a racist joke.

On Monday, the pop sensation issued an apologetic statement including the following:

“I’m very sorry. I take all my friendships with people of all cultures very seriously and I apologize for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable behavior. I thought it was okay to repeat hurtful words and jokes, but I didn’t realize at the time that it wasn’t funny and that in fact my actions were continuing the ignorance.”

English comedian and actor Russell Brand has made his protective stance over the 20-year-old star clear. In a YouTube response to the controversy, Brand says:

“Unless we’re going to explicitly say the role of celebrities is we’re going to make them really, really famous and then we’re going to destroy them and rip them up in a public square with fish hooks…which…I’m not against but we might as well own up to it if that is what we’re up to, otherwise just let him off.”

Brand himself has been on the hook for similar incidents countless times in the past, so his pleas come from a place of experience.
