‘Constantine’ Casts Zed After Lucy Griffiths Leaves

Following Lucy Griffith’s character being written out of NBC’s new series Constantine, the show has cast a new female lead that comes from the comic book source. Executive producers revealed during the TCA summer press tour that Angélica Celaya (Burn Notice) will play the role.

In the comic books, Zed (real name Mary Martin) is an artist who helps Constantine rescue his niece from an occultist who collects child brides. She becomes a love interest for Constantine and joins his fight against evil.

Speaking about the casting change, producer Daniel Cerone said, “Pilots are great because they’re a bit of a litmus test, we get to figure out what works and what doesn’t … Liv is a great character, she’s wide-eyed, she’s reactive, [but] we felt a bit hamstrung by her, frankly.”

One scene from the pilot episode will be reshot in order to explain Liv’s departure.
