Nina Dobrev Talks About Elena’s Struggle In ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season Four

Nina Dobrev recently opened up about what’s in store for Elena in Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries, and also how Elena is going to react to learning that she actually met Damon first. Will it be the game changer that so many fans hope it will be? After all, in the season finale she did say to Damon, “Maybe if I had met you first…”

“Finding out that she chose Stefan even though she actually met Damon first. . . there’s so much going on and there are so many emotions,” Dobrev recently told Us Weekly. “It’s going to be a new beast going into Season 4.”

Aside for the relationship drama that these repressed memories are sure to stir up between our favorite (now-all-vampire) love triangle, what else is in store for Elena after she wakes up and realizes what has happened?

“I know that Elena’s going to struggle a lot with keeping her humanity,” Nina shared. “Up until now, that’s what she’s been struggling to hold on to. Her life is so supernatural, and now, without having a choice, she’s going to have to live with it for the rest of her life.”

Elena might not be as accepting of this news as other females have been in vampire love stories. Twilight anyone? Bella was literally begging Edward to be a vampire well before the end of the book series. The fact that Elena was never like that is something that sets The Vampire Diaries apart from other stories from the same genre. It also makes the coming realization that she is a vampire now so much more challenging for Elena. It wasn’t something that she was wanting or counting down the days for…

How do you think Elena will handle the news in this fall’s return of The Vampire Diaries? Do you think that Damon has more of a shot now with Elena than before? Sound off with your hopes for your favorite Vampire Diaries characters in our comment section below!

  1. I am truly shocked that she will complete the transition going into season four. I mean, the show itself will probably last about seven of eight seasons [like Charmed, I’m hoping], so I just don’t understand or agree with why change her now. There is so much interesting already going on – like the storyline of the Originals, Klaus now in Tyler’s body, etc.; I really think they picked the wrong time to change her. I wasn’t expecting her transition to happen before the final season or honestly, even the final episode – the show is suppose to differ from all other stories and I’ve kind of liked how the focus has never been on her becoming a vampire. Season four I’m assuming will consist largely or her changing, adjusting, learning about her past and her future and honestly I’m not happy with that. I really though the Originals’ storyline could have been carried out through the fourth season…I’m hoping the writers find a way to make this event up to standerds of how they’ve always shyed away from that being the main subject of the show, but honestly I predict ratings to drop next season…

  2. I think is great that they chose to be different than any other TV show and show us more of Elena as a vampire: her struggle, her coping with not being a human anymore. The whole process of becoming a vampire. As for the love triangle it should still going on for a while. But in the end she should realize that what her and Damon have is passion and power. That’s what makes her different than when she is with Stefan. When she is with Stefan she loves a fairytale. Which is great for an 18 year old. But when she gets more mature she needs someone that makes her stronger, someone that will push her forward and make her discover who she really is. That is what’s so great about Damon and Elena: they complement each other. She makes him a better person/vampire, he makes her confident and … a woman.

  3. I am thrilled at the turn of events and Elena as a vampire. I think watching her adjust and change will be a plot device that will keep everyone on the edge of their seat through the next season or two.

I tend to think that she is a better match for Damon, rather than Stefan and find myself hoping that she will be more open to a relationship with him than she was before her change. After all, she will need help/instruction and all Stefan can teach her is to repress her hunger and hunt for bunnies. (Poor Thumper. Who did he ever hurt?)

I’m excited about the next season, and frankly, can’t wait.

  4. omg! Ian somerhalder/ damon salvatore is soooo hawt! 😀 i hope elena dumps stefan’s a$$ and ends up w/ damon. tht would b awesome-sauce. damon brings out other parts in elena that she won’t find in stefan. damon is obviously the better choice. and i completely agree with “Delena”, they DO complement each other. anyone else read the books? cuz elena would b perfect as damon’s princess of darkness( but i like show damon more thn book damon…) of course, i’d be the better choice for damon 😀
