‘The Maze Runner’ Tops US Box Office and Greenlights Sequel

The Maze Runner has surpassed its competition this weekend – Liam Neeson’s A Walk Among the Tombstones.

The first film adaptation of author James Dashner’s dystopian novels debuts with $32.5 million, prompting studio bosses at 20th Century Fox to greenlight a sequel, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, for release next autumn.

Meanwhile, Neeson’s latest action thriller is a distant second with a disappointing $13.1 million opening week, while star-studded comedy drama This Is Where I Leave You is also new at three with an $11.9 million haul.

Last week’s top film, Idris Elba’s No Good Deed, falls to four, followed by Dolphin Tale 2 at five.
