Could ‘Beyond the Lights’ Be the Next Great Love Story?

Beyond the Lights is the latest tale written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the same saint who brought the world Love & Basketball, and from the looks of the trailer, Prince-Blythewood may have given us the next great love story of our time.

The film stars rising talent Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who starred in festival-hit Belle, and Nate Parker as the couple who meet under near-tragic circumstances and fall in love soon after. It appears that viewers will be treated to a new twist on the typical star-crossed lovers genre and in the brief two-and-a-half minute trailer you already get a feel for the emotional rawness of the characters individually, as well as the deep love they share for one another once they find their better halves.

The official description of the film is as follows:

Beyond the Lights is the story of Noni Jean, a hot new award-winning artist who is primed for superstardom. But not all is what it seems, and the pressures cause Noni to nearly fall apart – until she meets Kaz Nicol, a promising young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail.

Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance. But can Kaz’s love give Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be?
