‘The Vampire Diaries’ Executive Producer Julie Plec Dishes on the Delena Rain Kiss

The Vampire Diaries fans were rewarded with a scene they’ve been itching for in a recent episode of the show, and we had the chance to get Julie Plec’s opinion on the long-awaited Delena rain kiss.

FanBolt had the opportunity to visit the set of The Originals and The Vampire Diaries this week, and the woman behind both shows took time out of her busy schedule (unexpectedly at that! How awesome is she?!) to chat with us about what inspired her to work the scene into the season for a hardcore group of persistent fans.

Check out her detailed answer about the epic kiss below!

“You know this is something, for every naysayer that’s like ‘Oh, fan-service blah blah blah,’ there’s fan-service when you’re telling stories based on- like as though the fans think it’s a Choose Your Own Adventure and that’s not what we do. And there’s the fan-service when you have a group of people who, for 5 years, have been begging for one little thing, and you find the perfect way to give it to them. That’s called honoring your fans and I believe that so strongly.

This is born out of… when Stefan got kidnapped in season 1, and Damon and Elena who, heretofore, hadn’t worked together much had to go and rescue Stefan from the vampire house, from Frederick. It was raining, and they’re standing there – like talking to each other about rescuing Stefan and that’s one of those canon moments where the people who started really connecting with Damon and Elena as a potential couple really always called out that moment like ‘Oh God, one day! One day they’ll be in the rain and they’ll kiss!’ It started to be just, like, a little Twitter thing that just, over the years has been- we laugh at it sometimes, we laugh with it. We kind of love it! It’s fun. It’s been sort of a frustrating request to fulfill, because it’s just so awful to shoot.

And yet here we were in the season, when Damon was trying to win Elena back with saying ‘We loved each other,’ and her saying ‘Tell me a memory that mattered to you. I want to remember something.’ We were writing the story, and we were thinking ‘ok, so what could that memory be?’ because we’ve always wanted to say ‘what was that summer that we skipped between season 4 and 5, you know, where they had the summer of their lives? What was that? What did they do?’ There’s gotta be something awesome that they did. And so we were like ‘ok, so is it like a meteor shower? Is it they’re out by a waterfall?’ and we were just pitching all these ideas and all of a sudden somebody- I don’t even know who it was, maybe it was me maybe it was somebody else- was like ‘What if they kissed in the rain?’ and we all went ‘OH GOD!’ and then we laughed because we’re like ‘Oh, the director is, like, gonna get killed by the people who hate Delena, the writer’s gonna get killed, but the people who love Delena are going to be so happy!’…

But really the story was what is this memory they shared? It was going to be something beautiful and epic and so the rain was a way of us saying to this group of fans who spent 5 years begging for this one thing… I think it’s because of ‘The Notebook‘!…

There’s something about two people coming together in the rain that’s like the ultimate expression of love in the minds of most audiences, I guess.”

You can catch a new episode of The Vampire Diaries tomorrow night at 8/7c on The CW. And we have lots more content coming from our set visits with both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals shortly!
