Scarlett Johansson Set to Star in ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Film Adaptation

Scarlett Johansson has signed on to star in an upcoming movie adaptation of Japanese manga series Ghost in the Shell.

DreamWorks studio officials had initially approached The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie to take on a lead role in the film, about a Japanese covert operations unit which specializes in fighting technology-related crimes, but she dropped out of negotiations in October in favor of signing up for another graphic novel project, Suicide Squad.

Now Johansson has agreed to step in for the live-action version of Ghost In The Shell, which will be directed by Snow White and the Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders, reports Variety.com.

It will be the second film adaptation of the hugely popular sci-fi series created by Masamune Shirow – director Mamoru Oshii previously took charge of an animated Ghost in the Shell in 1995.
