Katy Perry Talks Super Bowl Halftime Performance ‘Red Tape’

Katy Perry was astounded by the “red tape” she faced during preparations for her Super Bowl show, and insists she had no life “for six months” while she negotiated with NFL bosses.

The star hit the stage to headline the half-time show during the big football game on Sunday, and she wowed the crowd with her wacky costumes and guest appearances from Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz.

Perry’s set was later heralded as the most-watched TV concert in history with more than 118 million viewers tuning in for the 12-minute show, but the singer admits she endured months of stressful negotiations over every detail to comply with the wishes of National Football League bosses.

She tells Elle magazine, “In my show, I am boss daddy. I am boss mommy. They call me Boss. Everything goes through my eyes; I call all the shots, 100 per cent of it. With the NFL, I have to be accountable to several levels of red tape. There are many committees I have to go through for my costumes, the budgets of my show, every interview – everything, I have to report to somebody. So I am no longer the boss; I have to relinquish that control… Once you decide you’re gonna do the Super Bowl, you’re gonna have no f**king life for six months. It is the biggest thing…”

Perry, who went under the needle for a post-Super Bowl commemorative tattoo, also reveals she imposed a web ban after her performance so she does not have to read critics’ responses to her set, adding, “You stay off the Internet for the five days afterward.”
