‘Breaking Bad’ Star Giancarlo Esposito Says ‘There’s Always a Chance’ Gus Fring Could Make ‘Better Call Saul’ Appearance

FanBolt recently had a chance to chat with Breaking Bad stars Giancarlo Esposito and RJ Mitte during Walker Stalker Con Chicago and it seems that Breaking Bad fans haven’t necessarily seen the last of Gus Fring.

We all know how Gus met his untimely end on Breaking Bad, but with Better Call Saul rising in the ranks of AMC’s popular shows, it would have been a crime to not ask them about whether or not they’ll be involved with the prequel at some point, to which Esposito replied, “There’s always the chance.”

“I love [Better Call Saul],” the actor continued, “and early on they said ‘Would you, if we were able to find a place for you?’ and I said, ‘You know, I love these filmmakers so much, of course I would.’ I would very much enjoy going backwards in Gus’ life to the rise of Gus.”

Esposito even has his own ideas about what bringing Gus back should look like. “If I were to appear on the show, I’ve suggested to Vince [Gilligan, the shows’ creators) ‘Look, take it further. Let’s do a limited edition of the rise of Gus after I would appear, possibly, on Saul. I don’t know if that’ll happen, but I do hope so and there’s always a chance.”

So what do you think Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad fans? Would you like to see Giancarlo return as Gus and possibly even get a mini-series event dedicated to following the rise of Gus? We think it’s a great idea, but we’d rather hear what you have to say in the comments below!

You can watch the rest of our chat with Giancarlo and his Breaking Bad co-star RJ Mitte below!

  1. Absolutely! Gus was hands down my favorite character on the show. The mysterious nature of his origins is one of the greatest things about his character. Why did he leave Chile? How did Eladio “know him?” Why was he so close to Maximino? All of this would make for an excellent spinoff. I had a few ideas of my own concerning Gus’ origins …

He was found to be a child prodigy at a very early age by the Pinochet government and groomed to be a future Chilean military strategist due to his extraordinary intelligence, hence the line “Big Generalisimo” by Tio Salamanca. As he progressed throughout his career in the Chilean Army, he was found to be something of a regional national hero and a close confidant of Augusto Pinochet. He was eventually discovered to be a closeted homosexual (explains his extreme grieve at Maximino’s death in BB). In the Chilean 1980’s, you can imagine the backwards thinking concerning the idea of homosexuality. When this is discovered, the regime clandestinely force Gus (and Max) to emigrate to Mexico or face execution. Gus and Max eventually start their first chicken restaurant and begin to plot their drug empire using “Los Pollos Hermanos” as a distribution network. The territory they would need to sell to was not the United States however and they needed the blessing of Don Eladio to begin selling their product. A bit before the meeting between Gus, Max, Don Eladio, Tio, and Juan Bolsa we see in BB, we get to see Don Eladio personally briefed on who Gus really was by the Pinochet regime officials. These characters can be some sort of loyal to Gus special forces of the Chilean Army who respectfully warn Don Eladio that Gus is not to be physically harmed or face war with the Chileans. This would explain the “I know who you are” line in episode “Hermanos.”
