Should ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Continue Without Nina Dobrev?

When the news broke earlier this week that Nina Dobrev was leaving CW’s The Vampire Diaries, many fans were left either upset or in plain shock. A lead actor leaving a series on their own freewill isn’t something that we see that often, and it usually means a series is near the end of its run. Take for instance when Steve Carell left NBC’s The Office.

Dobrev announced the news on Monday via her Instagram, saying, “I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime.”

Dearest TVD Family, I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever. There’s more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you’ll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘that Twilight TV show.’ đŸ˜‰ I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t. Love, Nina

Vampire Diaries will be (without question) a different series when it returns in the fall for its seventh season, but will it still be a series that fans want to watch? Or will it be reminiscent of when Mischa Barton left The O.C., causing the next season to be cut short and cancelled?

Fans have certainly been vocal about the news on Twitter. Even today, “Elena Is The Soul Of TVD” and “Cancel TVD Season 7” were both trending.

Will Dobrev not renewing her contract mean that you won’t be watching season seven? Or will you still be tuning in? Let us know in our poll below!

  1. The idea that over 300 people have to lose their jobs because an actress who decided years ago that her storyline and part of this show is done after 6 years is ridiculous. Especially knowing these people could actually care less about said actress and are only here for the ship that actually is the reason this show started losing it viewers to begin with.

Fact is outside of their ship Delena fans don’t pay attention to any storyline or where the show is going so they are now screaming we were done wrong. No, no one did you wrong. It has been clear for quite some time now that DE was not the be all relationship on this show.
Look at the harsh contrast to any reasonable relationship on a decent show.

Season 5 was the Delena fest season and the worst season on this show. Literally everything about the season with the exception of bringing Bonnie back, Silas, Qetsiyah and the last 2 episodes most of the season was trash. And I know a lot of people stopped watching because of Delena.

Most Delena stans are outside of the US and seems to be people with enough time on their hands to vote for useless relationships awards that doesn’t further the show in anyway.

Instead of thinking you can blame the rest of the world go blame Nina or best be happy for her because she made her decision to leave based on her own needs and not that of shitty fans who only cares about the guy Elena is sleeping with.

Elena is a tool and has been so since the moment they killed her and used the sire bond to make Delena happen.

What about Delena is even worth talking about besides over the top useless epic love exclamation that I need to hear in each episode. The lack of chemistry and interest from both actors??

Please, she has played her part and had the opportunity to actually stay but chose to go. The show isn’t going to get cancelled so sit.

You campaigned you were going to give the show more ratings so they should give you Delena but when you had it, you ruined the show. So go away, if you aren’t going to watch. This might be what the show needs to get back on it’s feet.

  2. Bye Nina, hello to TVD better days. The show was stuck in Elena hell for seasons. People want the show cancelled & want others to protest because Nina wanted to move on? Delena fans continue to prove they aren’t that bright. Basically put other people out of work because someone didn’t follow the no dating your costars cause & couldn’t deal.

You will still be watching & complaining next season going on your little tirades threatening the real actors/actresses that play fictional characters.

  3. No. The show should just be cancelled. The story originally and always centred on Elena and the Salvatore brothers. Once you take one of those characters away, the show is dead. It’s time to end the show. It’s past its expiration date.

  4. I don’t mind seeing people leaving the fandom, people have been leaving for years.
I believe the 7th season will probably be the last but it’s pretty awesome because we will have an entire season to know better the rest of the characters with a new storyline or multiple and then have a decent end based on the said characters and focus on them instead of some fucked up triangle who ruined characters more than anything.
So if people want to leave, seriously no one is asking you to stay, if you can’t “watch without Nina” then go ahead.
It’s even better because now that we know that the massive group of people is gone, there will be no need to focus on trying to please the said group and give them scenes that came out of nowhere just to make them happy. It will be more about a story and entertainment I guess.
Also, with that kind of mentality, the “if I can’t win so no one will” then you can be sure it’s only a good thing for everyone, because this kind of people don’t deserves anything at all. Good riddance.
If it’s really the final year, then Kevin Williamson needs to come back đŸ™‚ just to write the final episode.

  5. Elena was the heart of the show, even though a lot of people, myself included, complained that everyone was always fawning over Elena, that doesn’t take away how important she was from the series. It doesn’t matter if you like delena or stelena, Elena was always in the two biggest couples. Without Elena who is Damon going to go to, Bonnie? I realize that many people have wanted them together, but Damon and Bonnie would never work, and everyone knows that Stefan and Caroline aren’t going to last, so who is Stefan going to go to? In all honesty TVD should have ended before season 5, Damon and Elena finally getting together should have been the ending or Stefan and Elena finally getting back together, the point is, is that it should have ended when vampire Elena chose.

  6. THE WORST THING IN WRITING DONE ON TVD IS DELENA-IT SHOULD’VE STAYED WITH PAUL WESLEY AND NINA DOBREV! STELENA-THAT WAS WORTHWHILE, THEY SHOULD BRING THAT NOTE ON THE SET FOR KEEPS-
THEY SHOULD NOW BRING ON VICTORIA JUSTICE FOR REPLACING NINA DOBREV…
I LOVE NINA DOBREVS’ WORK, SO IT IS SAD THAT SHE IS LEAVING, HOWEVER….THE SHOW MUST GO ON – STILL HAVE IAN S. AND PAUL W. ON!

  7. This just made me depressed… So many people would ditch TVD just because Elena’s not there? You mean to tell me their sole purpose of watching this show was Dullena? Elena has already died at the end of season 3 and then some gutless, selfish, narcissistic mosquito took her place. She was already gone for 3 seasons and people were watching just fine. :C

  8. Now I’ll start watching it again. Nina out of TVD sounds like a dream, can’t wait! Now we’ll finally have Damon back! Yes and more Defan and Bamon! Bring it on Season 7!! Woohoo

  9. never liked her Mary Sue character from the beginning nor did i like her Selfish Vampire side so is it any wonder i’d be super psyched to watch the show without her?
    Good riddance, i tell you
