‘Helix’ Cancelled

Syfy has canned their original series Helix after its second season.

The show’s second season finale, which aired on April 10, also doubled as its series finale.

The series followed CDC pathologist Dr. Alan Farragut (The Killing’s Campbell) and his estranged ex-wife, Dr. Julia Walker (Kyra Zagorsky), after they’re sent to the Arctic to investigate a mysterious disease outbreak. It starred Kyra Zagorsky, Billy Campbell Neil Napie, Mark Ghanimé, and Jordan Hayes.

Helix premiered in January 2014 to 2.8 million viewers, however was hanging on during its second season with an average of 563,000 total viewers. The series finale only brought in 440,000 total viewers, a series low.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first to break the news, “the decision to cancel Helix comes as Syfy has been making a concerted effort to focus on high-profile science fiction programming, including 12 Monkeys — already renewed for a second season — and big-swings The Expanse and Childhood’s End.” The Magicians, a pilot from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company is also headed to the network.

Where the Sharknado movies fit into that “high profile science fiction programming” remains to be seen.
