‘Orange is the New Black’ Creator and Cast Talk Season 3

With the third season premiere of Netflix’s hit series Orange is the New Black being right around the corner, we’re glad to get some new details about what to expect from our favorite prisoners this year.

Jenji Kohan, the show’s creator, was joined by series’ stars Taylor Schilling, Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Danielle Brooks, Selenis Leyva and Kate Mulgrew at the For Your Consideration panel discussion Wednesday at the DGA, and they all gave fans some insight into what to expect from the show’s upcoming season.

Jenji noted that this season would have a lighter tone than the previous one saying,”It’s lighter than season 2, it’s a season of faith, it’s a season of motherhood, it’s a progression of everyone’s stories.” She continued, “I think we get deeper into our characters and we meet people.”

Laverne Cox and Danielle Brooks opened up about what being on the show means for them as individuals. “Being a woman of plus-size, a curvy girl… I’m thankful for the show for highlighting that,” said Brooks. “That’s giving voice to the people that are here and I’m just glad I could be that girl I didn’t see on television when I was young.”

Cox feels the show has a deep meaning for everyone who watches. “It validates people’s experiences,” she said. “So many people, I think, have watched our show and felt their experiences, their bodies, their gender identity, their sexuality, their age, are validated in the diverse women that are portrayed on our show. When you can see someone like you on TV, it’s like, ‘OK, I exist now’.”

Orange is the New Black returns to Netflix for its third season Friday, June 12.
