Ian Somerhalder on Elena-less ‘The Vampire Diaries’: ‘We’re Actually Very Excited About Telling This Story’

The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder is shedding some light on his feelings about the departure of Nina Dobrev’s character Elena Gilbert.

Fans had mixed reactions when they found out that Elena had been placed under a sleeping curse that would only break when her best friend Bonnie dies. Most of the fandom was concerned about how the show would continue without its lead female, and now her on-screen love has revealed how he thinks that will happen.

“The way it was done was great. The way it was done was actually incredible, because it allows people to know that she’s still there…she’s not dead,” Ian told Extra during an interview today. “In seventy years or however long Bonnie lives, Elena will resurface at some point, although we’ll be very old when that happens.”

“We’re actually very excited about telling this story,” he went on to say. “Mystic Falls without Elena Gilbert is going to be very different. We want to go back to that Season 1 and Season 2 of storytelling… I think that the last scene in the last episode that you see is truly a depiction of what this next season’s going to be.”

Let us know how you think the new season will play out now that Elena is out of the picture (for a WHILE).
