‘Supernatural’ Star Misha Collins Talks G.I.S.H.W.H.E.S. Shatner Clause, Castiel’s Struggles and More

Misha Collins is one cool dude. He plays everyone’s favorite angel, Castiel, in the long-running series Supernatural, and when he’s not busy kicking TV butt, he loves devoting time to his fans by arranging super fun scavenger hunts for them.

A cause close to Collins’ heart is his annual Gishwhes event. It’s essentially a scavenger hunt that tens of thousands of participants from over 100 countries participate in each year, as they complete exciting, inspiring, and unconventional challenges (“Items”) intended to break people outside of their comfort zone, spread kindness and create social good within their respective communities.

The Gishwes campaign has drawn attention from lots of interesting people, one of its biggest supporters being none other than William Shatner. “William Shatner is participating for the second year in the scavenger hunt and he seems bound and determined to win,” revealed Collins. “He recruited the Director of Solar System Exploration at NASA to be on his GISHWES team. So, yeah, he’s very serious about it.”

Shatner is such a fan of the hunt, in fact, that Collins had to employ the Shatner Clause to maintain a level of fairness in the game.

“We have a Shatner Clause, which is that if someone like William Shatner actually wins the scavenger hunt, the runner-up also wins so that ordinary people have a shot. Even so, last year he had Grant Imohara on his team, he had a very heavy-hitting team last year, and it was basically a group of, like 22-year olds that won.”

Supernatural‘s 11th season will premiere in a couple of months and Misha, of course, teased what fans can expect from the angel who can never catch a break. “He’s still struggling with the effects of that attack dog spell from Rowena, so we’re really picking up the pieces right where we left off in the beginning of season 11,” said Collins of Cas’ fate when the show returns.

Watch Misha’s entire interview below, which includes how his love of kale led to an interesting G.I.S.H.W.E.S sponsor, how happily shocked he is that the show is still going strong 11 seasons in and more!
