‘Empire’ Co-Creator Lee Daniels Developing New TV Pilot Set in Atlanta

Lee Daniels is one busy man! Not only is he partially responsible for running one of the most successful new shows on TV, Empire, but now he’s getting ready to try and duplicate that success in the form of a new FOX series.

The network announced today that they’ve ordered a new pilot, Star, from Daniels. The show follows the story of three young women, all with hopes of making it big, and the choices they’re faced with along the way. It will showcase the allure and heartache of the cut-throat music scene, while also exploring cultural themes from a new perspective. What would you do to rise to the top?

The new series is set in Atlanta, but there’s no word on whether or not it would actually film here (although we can’t see any reasons why they wouldn’t). If picked up, Star would be the third TV series this year to be set in the city, with Donald Glover’s Atlanta heading to FX and Will Packer’s Buckhead in development over at NBC.

The project is the first to emerge from Daniels’ multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.

Casting for the pilot will begin shortly.

Lee’s current project Empire returns to FOX Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 9pm.
