Miley’s Movie Extended In U.S. Theaters After Big Debut

MILEY CYRUS’ 3D concert movie will play in U.S. cinemas for a second week after the film shot to the top of the box office with a $29 million (#14.5 million) opening weekend take.

The film, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, was only supposed to play select theaters for a week, but ticket demand has forced Disney bosses to extend the project’s big-screen run.

The new movie becomes the biggest opener during a Super Bowl weekend and breaks records by topping the box office charts while playing at so few theaters – it opened on Friday (01Feb08) in just over 2,000 cinemas, picking up an average of over $42,000 (#21,000) a venue.

Jessica Alba’s horror film The Eye opened in second place with $13 million
(#6.5 million), and Katherine Heigl’s wedding comedy 27 Dresses debuted at three with $8.4 million (#4.2 million).

Eva Longoria’s new comedy Over Her Dead Body was the weekend’s biggest flop, missing out on the box office top 10 with a poor $4.6 million (#2.3 million) debut.
