‘Star Wars’ and ‘The Walking Dead’ Lead Saturn Awards Nominations

The Atlanta-filmed, The Walking Dead leads nominations for the Saturn Awards for the television category. The AMC series received 7 nominations including Best Horror Series on Television, a vertical in which it will face off with American Horror Story: Hotel, Ash vs. Evil Dead, Salem, Teen Wolf, The Strain, and The Walking Dead spin-off Fear the Walking Dead.

Game of Thrones scored five nods, while Daredevil, Hannibal, Supergirl and Wayward Pines all landed four nominations apiece.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be the film to beat at the 2016 Saturn Awards after scoring 15 nominations. The record-breaking installment of the sci-fi franchise is up for the top prize of Best Science Fiction Film, alongside Ex Machina, Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian and Terminator: Genisys.

J.J. Abrams will compete for Best Director, and nearly all the movie’s stars, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher and Lupita Nyong’o, are up for acting awards.

The blockbuster is also up for Best Film Writing, Best Film Music, Best Film Editing, Best Film Production Design, Best Film Costume Design, Best Film Make-Up, and Best Film Special/Visual Effects.

Guillermo Del Toro’s horror flick Crimson Peak and post-apocalyptic action movie Mad Max: Fury Road follow with nine nominations each, while Jurassic World received seven.

Other multiple nominees include The Martian, Ant-Man, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ex Machina.

The awards, presented by officials at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, will be handed out in June.
