Lionsgate Buys ‘The Hunger Game’ Rights

Lionsgate has picked up the film adaptation rights to ‘The Hunger Games’, a book series written by New York Times best-seller Suzanne Collins. The books take place in a disaster-ridden world and features a lead protagonist named Katniss. She is thrown into battle against other people in a gladitorial-like competition where the goal is be the last one standing.

Collins wrote the screenplay, with Billy Ray (the upcoming ‘24’ film) coming on to do some touching up. The series is said to have a “solid female fanbase” and could be the next ‘Twilight’ or ‘Harry Potter’.
