James Cameron Cranking Out Not One, But Two ‘Avatar’ Sequels

Avatar fans were filled with excitement when director James Cameron made us the promise that he would return to Pandora for a sequel: but fans are ecstatic to find out that Cameron is bringing not one, but two sequels to the big screen in the near future!

Some fans are voicing the opinion that ‘milking’ the story too much may cause a case of ‘bad sequel syndrome’, but the majority are realizing: this is James Cameron we’re talking about here, and in a recent statement, he makes it clear that the sequels will be above and beyond fan expectations:

“In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of Avatar‘s visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world,” Cameron said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.”

20th Century Fox is targeting a December 2014 release for Avatar 2 and December 2015 for Avatar 3. In recent interviews, Cameron has made it clear that while the sequels are in production, he will focus exclusively on them and them alone to ensure every detail is perfected. Stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are aboard to reprise their respective roles as parapalegic Marine-turned-Na’vi warrior Jake Sully and his princess girlfriend, Neytiri.

Cameron will begin on the scripts in early 2011 with shooting expected to begin by the end of 2011.

  1. It’s a great movie! I don’t know what I think about there being two more sequels… I think unless there is a story there to start with (aka Lord of the Rings or Twilight) it’s hard to do sequels and have them live up to the first film.
