I’ve no doubt you’ve already read a review (or two) for Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, and I’ve no doubt it was a positive one. I wish I could say I’m not going to parrot the praise everyone’s been heaping on this game (because dissenting opinion = drama and drama=hits), but that’d be a lie. This game is great and you should totally play it.

A ranger named Talion and his family are enjoying the relatively quiet life when things suddenly go horribly wrong. And before you can say “I sure am glad the tutorial is over” his wife, his son, and he himself are murdered by one of The Dark Lord’s elite officers. But death doesn’t really get in Talion’s way when it comes to revenge – oh no – instead he ends up partnering with the specter of a long-gone elf and inhabiting the world between life and death.

mordor07
Talion’s quest for payback will see him through a couple of rather large open-world environments in Mordor; both of which have been infested with Uruks (the larger than normal “buff-dude” orcs). I’m a bit confused as to why they’re all over the place seeing as the game is supposedly set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and it was my understanding that Saruman created the Uruks during The Lord of the Rings, but it’s really not all that important anyway. They make good fodder. I was also a bit put off by the recycling of one of the major scenes from The Lord of the Rings (possessed Theoden says “Hi!”), but again, it’s not very important.

Honestly, the story in Shadow of Mordor is largely forgettable. Tragedy leads to revenge, unwilling partners become something akin to friends, broody-broody-stab-stab, etc. It’s just a vehicle to keep everything else moving. Thankfully everything else is ridiculously fun.

mordor02
Shadow of Mordor plays a lot like a combination of Assassin’s Creed and Arkham Asylum in that Talion clambers all over everything, performs brutal stealth kills, uses Detective Mode Wraith Vision to see enemies through objects and over great distances, and the combat is pretty much Batman but with swords. None of that is really a dig against the game, however, as it pulls all of these elements off quite well even before you start getting the ridiculously over-powered abilities from the late game. However, the real standout is the much-touted Nemesis System.

Sprinkled throughout Mordor are a number of low-level Uruk captains, elites, and war chiefs. These named enemies don’t just present a bit more of a challenge, but also provide major targets. The thing is, if an Uruk kills you he’ll be promoted – so a captain will become even more powerful, a nameless Uruk will become a captain, and so on. Then you can hunt them down and get them back if you so desire. Similarly, sometimes an Uruk you kill can miraculously survive, and might return with even more power and a serious axe to grind. I’m not kidding: one such Uruk came after me like five times in a row. He just wouldn’t stay dead!

mordor08
The hierarchy of Sauron’s army is constantly in flux, so if you kill a captain another will eventually be promoted to take his place. However you can also turn the chain of command to your advantage if, say, you eliminate a chief’s bodyguard and leave him with far less protection. Later on you’ll even be able to influence the minds of the Uruks, including the captains and war chiefs, which is practically a whole other game unto itself.

So, should you play Shadow of Mordor? Well, that depends. Do you like open-world games? Do you enjoy feeling ridiculously powerful (as in games like Prototype)? Does the idea of suddenly looking at the clock and realizing you’ve spend the last five hours doing nothing but hunting down Uruk captains, converting them to your cause, helping them maneuver their way to becoming a war chief’s elite bodyguards, then confronting said war chief and turning his elite guard against him sound appealing? Because I sure as heck think it does!

Kristen Stewart is to take a break from the movie industry to concentrate on her new passion for art.

Stewart plans to buy a studio in Los Angeles so she can start working on various art projects, while she also wants to spend time making a short film and writing poetry.

She tells USA Today, “I’m taking some time off because I’ve been working for two years. I’m an actor and that’s my art form, and because I started that so young, I’ve always felt intimidated and insufficient when I think about other forms of art I want to create.

“I’m going to buy a live-work space in downtown L.A. and I’m going to make some (stuff) with my hands. Literally, I made that decision a few weeks ago. I’m making a short film. I’m making a bunch of (stuff). I don’t know how I’ll put it out. But I’m not going to hold it so preciously close to me. I write all the time.”

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has shrugged off an online petition calling for action figures based on the hit TV series to be removed from a children’s toy store.

Susan Schrivjer from Florida created the petition last week urging bosses of children’s chain store Toys ‘R’ Us to stop selling the character models from the drug dealer show because they represent “a dangerous deviation from their family friendly values”.

Schrivjer notes that the Walter White figurine is holding a gun and a bag of crystal meth, the drug Cranston’s character makes and sells in the adult drama.

However, Cranston is not taking the petition seriously, and has posted a joking message on Twitter writing, “‘Florida mom petitions against Toys ‘R Us over Breaking Bad action figures.’ I’m so mad, I’m burning my Florida Mom action figure in protest.”

The petition has gained more than 6,000 signatures.

Melissa McCarthy has dismissed recent reports suggesting she has signed on to star in the upcoming all-female reboot of Ghostbusters.

The Emmy-winning actress is considered a frontrunner in the highly-anticipated remake of the sci-fi classic, because the film will be directed by Paul Feig, who helmed both her films Bridesmaids and The Heat.

However, during an appearance on The Ellen Show yesterday, McCarthy dodged the TV presenter’s questions about joining the Ghostbusters cast, and kept repeating, “I’m not in, I’m not in!”

If McCarthy is considered for a role in the reboot, she has a big advocate in her corner – her St. Vincent co-star Bill Murray, who starred in the original films.

He said, “Melissa (McCarthy) would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny… I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot, and Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

Gillian Anderson and Lena Dunham have also expressed an interest in appearing in the film.

Ariana Grande has reportedly cancelled a trip to Spain amid fears of an Ebola outbreak in the country.

The “Problem” hitmaker’s team is believed to have scrapped her planned press tour shortly after it emerged that four suspected cases of the disease have been discovered there since the outbreak erupted in West Africa earlier this year.

A source tells British newspaper The Sun, “Ariana’s promo trip had to be cancelled – her team weren’t prepared to take any chances during the incubation period… of course, some people might think it’s an overreaction but everyone agreed it was the right decision… It’s nothing against her Spanish fans and she was conscious to make sure the visit was put back in the diary in the future.

“Ariana headed to Paris instead and now won’t get round to visiting Spain until November at the earliest, if at all this year.”

The four suspected cases in Spain tested negative. The Ebola outbreak has cost more than 4,400 lives in West Africa. The first person diagnosed with the disease in the U.S. died in a Texas hospital earlier this month.

Fashion mogul Oscar de la Renta has died, aged 82.

The acclaimed Dominican designer passed away on Monday at his home in Kent, Connecticut, his wife Annette de la Renta has confirmed.

She did not divulge the exact cause of her husband’s death, but de la Renta had been intermittently battling cancer since his initial diagnosis in 2006.

A handwritten statement signed by two of his company’s executives, son-in-law Alex Bolen and stepdaughter Eliza Bolen, reads:

“While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much us. Oscar’s hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company.

“All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar’s example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much.”

De la Renta was born into high society in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1932. At the age of 18, he moved to Madrid, Spain to study painting in at the Academy of San Fernando. There he developed his love for sketching fashion designs, and it led to a coveted apprenticeship with top Spanish couturier Cristobal Belenciaga, and assistant jobs at French fashion houses Lanvin and Balmain in Paris.

In 1963, he moved to New York City to work for designer Jane Derby at Arden, and two years later (1965), he launched his own ready-to-wear label at the age of 33.

His feminine and flowing gowns caught the eye of former U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who made de la Renta her go-to designer for many years.

Other first ladies including Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton were also big fans. Earlier this year Laura Bush, feted de la Renta at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas, Texas in a retrospective titled Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style, which featured more than 60 of his impeccable gowns.

His designs were beloved and worn by A-list fashionistas, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Chastain, Kerry Washington and countless others.

Most recently, he collaborated with George Clooney’s now-wife Amal on her wedding gown for her September nuptials in Italy.

The British lawyer told Vogue last month, “George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress. Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman.”

Over his 50 year career, de la Renta was honored with numerous awards, including two Council of Fashion Designers Designer of the Year Awards, a CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award, two Coty American Fashion Critics’ Awards, the Gold Medal Award from the King and Queen of Spain, the Legion d’honneur as a Commande from France, and the order al Merito de Juan Pablo Duarte and the order of Cristobol Colon from his native Dominican Republic.

De la Renta was married to French Vogue editor Francois Langlade for 16 years until her death in 1983. He is survived by his second wife, Annette, three stepchildren, and his adopted son Moises.

It’s been just over two years now since I’ve built my first gaming PC. It’s received a few improvements during that time, including a recent change that replaced a cheap Cooler Master case with the lovely Throne case from Rosewill. This also gave me the opportunity to change the way I wired the components, whereas before I simply “hooked it up” instead of nicely hiding the cords behind the case and tying them together. Yeah, it was a mess. But who’s first build isn’t?

The graphics card is the latest upgrade I’ve made by replacing the GTX 770 2GB with the GTX 980 4GB. I was pretty much enjoying all the latest games on maxed out settings with the 770. However, the release of Shadow of Mordor completely ruined that party. I wasn’t able to max out the settings unless I wanted to deal with frames per second (FPS) in the low 20’s (obviously, that wasn’t going to happen). So, I changed the settings to mostly high with a few options on medium and still only got around 45 FPS when using the 770.

I’m always playing and writing about many of the latest releases, so it’s important for me to have the latest and best when possible. Enter the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980.

20141008_133624

20141010_013201_2

I didn’t fully realize that I was just getting by in performance on games that require a large demand from graphics cards. However, it became very clear when doing benchmarks on games like Shadow of Mordor, Hitman: Absolution, and even GRID Autosport. When comparing benchmarks on the 770 to the 980, I could then see exactly how the performance of the 770 was just good enough and that the 980 is now opening the door to better FPS and performance.

The GTX 980 has doubled the FPS on most of every game. Now, surely that makes sense when comparing the two cards, but it’s still nice to see after putting them to the test. I love getting to play Shadow of Mordor on ultra settings (with HD texture pack installed) and getting around 80 FPS when before it just wasn’t possible on the 770. Hitman: Absolution went from around 30 FPS to near 60 and GRID Autosport went from 60 FPS to 120 FPS. It’s nice!

Of course, one of the main features with the GTX 980 is that it provides the ability to play games in 4K on standard 1080p screens by use of the DSR feature (Dynamic Super Resolution). DSR renders a game at a higher and more detailed resolution and shrinks it back down to the resolution of your monitor, providing 4K-like graphics on an HD screen.

By using the GeForce Experience desktop app, users can select specific games to play on 3840×2160. This, of course, drops the frame rate back down to near 30 when using ultra settings on most games, which almost feels not worth it for those who don’t own a 4K monitor. But at least the option is there to experiment with and lets users take larger screenshots which is something I do like for quality purposes.

As far as the basic performance goes, the GTX 980 has been a welcomed addition to my Throne. I’m now able to continue playing the latest games with maxed out settings while maintaining a strong FPS. Plus, when the time comes that I do get a 4K monitor, I’ll have the ability to push those limits even though I’ll lose out a bit on FPS.

Below you’ll find screenshots displaying the benchmark tests using the GTX 770 and the GTX 980. You’ll also find gameplay video taken from Shadow of Mordor while playing on ultra settings with the GTX 980. I even decided to record a little bit of gameplay and snap a few screenshots from a couple of games while using the DSR feature.

Jason Momoa has recruited “water men” of his family to help him perfect superhero Aquaman.

The former Game of Thrones star recently confirmed he will be playing the wet stud in the Man of Steel sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he’s taking the role very seriously so he doesn’t disappoint his Polynesian ancestors.

He tells LatinoReview.com, “The greatest thing for me is that Polynesians, our gods, Kahoali, Maui, (are) all these water gods, so it’s really cool and a honor to be playing the character. And there’s not too many brown superheroes, so I’m really looking forward to representing the Polynesians, the natives.

“My family are some of the greatest water men on earth. I’m not, but I’m going to go train with them… Water is the most important thing in this world and we all know it.

“(Director) Zack Snyder’s a genius, so I’m really excited to be hanging out with him.”

Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon has apologized to his fans following an arrest in Idaho on Friday night.

The actor claims he mixed prescription medicine with alcohol and lost control in Boise, where he was charged with two misdemeanors following a disturbance at a city hotel.

In a statement released on his Facebook page on Monday, Brendon writes: “I apologize. Usually those words end a message like this but I am beginning with them to emphasize how much I regret disappointing my family, my fans, and myself. I can offer an explanation but I make no excuse for my unacceptable behavior.

“For the past 5 days, I have been taking prescription pain medication to help me manage a cyst behind my knee cap, which is scheduled for corrective surgery… I made the poor decision to mix this prescribed medication with alcohol. The result was embarrassing and unacceptable.”

He adds, “I intend to seek appropriate treatment and therapy for my medical ailments as well as my emotional demons. Again: I apologize. Those two small words don’t begin to express my regrets, but they do mark the beginning of my recovery. During this difficult time, I appreciate understanding as I pursue rehabilitation – and I value support as I earn redemption with my family, friends, and fans.”

Pitbull has signed up to host the American Music Awards again after his debut last year turned into ratings gold.

The rapper will front the 2014 show from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on November 23, and admits he’s thrilled to be back.

He says, “World, who would have thought Pitbull hosting the AMAs two years in a row. The harder I work, the luckier I get. Thank you (TV producers at) ABC and Dick Clark Productions for the amazing opportunity. More than anything, let’s get ready to have fun.”

Pitbull will also perform, along with Charli XCX. Other acts and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.

Iggy Azalea leads all nominations with six, just ahead of John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, who each have five.

Meanwhile, AMA bosses have hit back at Sinead O’Connor’s claims she was uninvited from performing at this year’s awards ceremony because The Pope was not interested in introducing her.

In a post on her website earlier this month, the singer claimed Dick Clark Productions officials reached out to the pontiff and asked him to introduce O’Connor, who famously ripped up a photo of his predecessor as part of a protest against the Catholic Church during an appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, and he refused to get back to them.

As a result, Sinead alleges show bosses dumped her planned performance.

But sources close to AMA officials insist the singer has her facts all wrong, telling TMZ her remarks are ridiculous.
