'Desperate Housewives' a renewal story for stars and creator
DAVID BAUDER
Associated Press
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - A year ago, Teri Hatcher watched the Golden Globes at home in bed, wearing pajamas and munching popcorn.
She had a much better time Sunday. The veteran actress won the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy and her hit ABC show "Desperate Housewives" won best comedy.
In an upset, the FX series about plastic surgery, "Nip/Tuck," was named best television drama. It beat some more celebrated series like "The Sopranos," "24" and ABC's other freshman sensation, "Lost."
"Desperate Housewives" was the night's redemption story, not just for actresses like Hatcher but for creator Marc Cherry. His script was turned down by several networks until ABC, desperate for a hit, took a chance.
"I was a 40-year-old comedy writer," Cherry said in accepting the series' award. "I went two and a half years without getting an interview for a job."
Cherry and his cast were ebullient backstage, perhaps aided by the Golden Globe's traditional open bar.
"We really are just a big team," Hatcher said. "Everyone is unique and equally strong in their characters."
There was some question whether the series, with its moments of pathos and absurdity, would be entered in the comedy or drama category. It's nothing like sitcoms "Sex and the City" and "Will & Grace," which were also nominated.
"It's not exactly fair," Cherry said. "But the truth is, we're not like any of those dramas either, so a choice had to be made."
Cherry attended the Golden Globes with his mother. It was appropriate, since her mother helped give birth to the series.
He recalled watching news stories a few years ago about Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who drowned her children, and wondering who could be so desperate. His mother shocked him by saying, "I've been there."
"The idea for the series was born right then and there," he said.

Desperate Housewives - Desperate DVDs drop to stores this year!
Posted by David Lambert
1/17/2005
Congrats to Desperate Housewives - one of my favorite guilty pleasures and a can't-miss show every Sunday evening - for the show's Golden Globe win last night for "Best Musical or Comedy Series" and for Teri Hatcher's win for "Best Actress, Musical or Comedy". And the great news for Desperate Housewives fans didn't stop there! More hot stuff came from backstage after the wins...about a DVD release of the show!
Backstage at the awards ceremony, TV Guide Insider Michael Ausiello was keeping a log (BLog?) of what was going on with the winners. At the 11:00 timeframe, Ausiello talks about getting together with the cast of Desperate Housewives in the press room. Here's what he logged:
11:00 The entire cast of Desperate Housewives is in the press room basking in their best comedy series win. When a reporter asks which of the women has the best love life, all the gals point to Felicity Huffman. Bill Macy, you little devil!
11:10 Housewives creator/exec producer Marc Cherry says Marcia Cross initially balked at reciting the line, "Rex cries when he ejaculates."
11:11 What do Halle Berry, Kevin Spacey and Lawrence Fishburne have in common? They all admitted to being big fans of the show, Eva Longoria reveals.
11:12 The first-season Housewives DVD drops in August. Scoop!
11:12 On being named the worst dressed celeb by Mr. Blackwell, Nicollette Sheridan sasses, "I'd rather be No. 1 on the worst-dressed than No. 2 on the best-dressed. What the hell does Mr. Blackwell know anyway?"
Yes, Michael...scoop! Good job on getting it, too. Fans of the show were hoping that this would come to light, especially after hearing that another successful new ABC series, Lost, was said to be getting a DVD release in 2005.
This is really early info, mind you, so stay tuned and we'll update you with any developments that we hear about. Great news, though!

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES CREATOR OFFERS OPRAH A ROLE
LATEST: OPRAH WINFREY's desire to act again has been met with open arms - the creator of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES is now offering her a role.
The billionaire talk show host, who scored an OSCAR nomination for her role in the acclaimed movie THE COLOR PURPLE, had all but quit acting after the poor reception of her 1998 film BELOVED.
But after acting in a Desperate Housewives skit - written for her by the series' creator MARC CHERRY - on her chat show, Winfrey, said, "I thought I was done with my acting days, but I loved being a part of the Desperate Housewives so much that I'm thinking I might do something else soon."
And now Cherry assures, "I'll write anything she wants."

I haven't seen a thread about this yet so I just thought I'd post one, as I think it's VERY cool news... Alfre Woodard is joining the main cast next season (http://www.getdesperate.com/news/120405_01.shtml)! Finally the show is getting some color! She'll make her first appearance in a guest role in the finale, and then she'll be added to the opening credits next season.
I think the other Housewives had better watch out if they want a shot at awards glory, following Teri Hatcher. Woodard is an absolute Emmy machine - she's won four times and has been nominated countless times. If you think Marcia Cross is angry now, wait until she's upstaged by a NEW cast member, LOL :).
Anyway, she'll be playing a new mother who comes to Wisteria Lane with her son in tow. GetDesperate.com has more info, but I guess that'd quality as a spoiler, so you just have to read on here (http://www.getdesperate.com/news/120405_01.shtml)
If I can speculate a little, though... what do you think is going to be her dirty laundry?? WIll it have to do with the reason she's a single mom? On a show like this, I suppose that always means there's a Desperate Husband still lurking somewhere in the background :D

Warren Full Of Praise For 'DH' Cast
See Also: Lesley Ann Warren People Guide, Bob Newhart People Guide
Lesley Ann Warren, who recently made her debut as Susan Mayer's mother Sophie Bremmer, has spoken about the positive atmosphere on the Desperate Housewives set.
"I can tell you there is no weirdness, nothing at all," Warren told TV Guide. "There's absolutely no truth to the rumors [that the women don't get along] ... believe me, these women are out of their minds with happiness and gratitude. They are clear that this is an amazing gift."
Warren echoed these thoughts in separate interview with ETonline.com. "They're so generous and so loving," she said, talking of the cast. "When I walked in the makeup trailer and Teri [Hatcher] was there, she was so sweet and so acknowledging. All the women were like that."
Meanwhile, Bob Newhart who landed the role of Sophie's estranged boyfriend Morty, said he flattered to be cast. "[My agent] said, 'Here's the script and they want you specifically. They admire your work,'" he told Chicago Tribune. "I read it and I liked it and I thought 'Well, they could have just about anybody they wanted, I guess.' The fact that they wanted me, I found very flattering."
Creator Marc Cherry said he was happy to have Newhart on the show. "The real thrill was finding out he was just as nice as he is talented," said Cherry. "We plan on having him back as many times as he'll let us."

Desperate Housewives star Cody Kasch has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, following his arrest in New York City. Plainclothes officers arrested 17-year-old Kasch, who plays troubled teen Zach Young on the hit series, late on Tuesday night in Manhattan's East Village after they spotted him allegedly smoking marijuana in public, says a police department spokeswoman. Kasch, who has a Queens address, was charged with fifth-degree drug possession, given a ticket and released. No court date was set.

Mary Kay canceling plans to advertise on Desperate Housewives
*
It looks like Mary Kay cosmetics won't be sold on Wisteria Lane.
After protests by a Christian group, the Mary Kay corporation is suspending plans to advertise on A-B-C's popular "Desperate Housewives" program.
American Family Association chairman Don Wildmon wondered how a company whose official philosophy is "God first, family second and career third" could align itself with a show that he says promotes infidelity, seduction and promiscuity. He urged Mary Kay consultants and customers to tell the company that they opposed a "Desperate Housewives" ad campaign.
Mary Kay spokeswoman Shannon Summers says that after receiving a number of calls, the cosmetics firm is revising its media mix and "will not have 'Desperate Housewives' in that mix."

E! News Weekend reported that Marcia Cross is in engaged.
Here is an article from Yahoo News regarding it.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Marcia Cross, a star of the ABC hit show "Desperate Housewives," is headed for real-life matrimony with her stockbroker boyfriend, Tom Mahoney, Us Weekly magazine reported on Friday.
The performer's publicist, Heidi Slan, was quoted on the magazine's Web site as saying Cross, 43, and Mahoney, 47, became engaged during the past weekend, but she added, "the happy couple have not set a date for the wedding yet."
The red-haired actress, who earned an Emmy nomination for her role as the perfectionist homemaker Bree Van de Kamp on "Desperate Housewives," began dating Mahoney about six months ago. They recently vacationed together in Europe and Aspen, Colorado, the magazine said.
Neither has been married before.
Darkly comic "Desperate Housewives" ranked as the most watched new series on U.S. television last season, helping lead a ratings turnaround at ABC. The show garnered 15 Emmy nominations in all, including a bid for best comedy.
