Yeah, it was about time for a new Hurricane Katrina thread.

I was watching Best Week Ever today, and they had a clip of Kanye West talking about how Bush hates blacks while Mike Myers looks on, horrified. And they had clips of the celebrities down in New Orleans.

Anybody think there's going to be lots of hurricane talk tonight at the Emmys?

christy86
09-18-2005, 01:32 PM
Probably. Didn't anyone see that mother/daughter that got free tickets to the Emmys?

^I would love to go to the Emmys. Hopefully, they show them on the red carpet, all decked out in celebrity clothing!!!

My dad left for New Orleans today. I'm really worried bout him cause he's the kinda guy that doesn't care about his health. He got a generator that was broken and fixed it so hopefully that will help him work longer than stopping we it gets dark. Before he left, he signed a card for his mom, cause its almost her birthday, saying "Your loving refugee son" I just thought that was pretty funny. He's planning to call us tonight and update us on everything.

^Your dad's going back to New Orleans? Permanetly? I wish him and you all luck with everything.

A lawyer I used to work for got to go to the Emmys last year. He was one of the makeovers on Queer Eye, and the guys called and invited him to go.

Hes actually good friends with Jai now, since they are both theater lovers.

Thanks. He's going there to see what the damage is. He has cameras for the insurance company and keys to my other relatives house to what the damage is there too.

I got really anxious when they said on the news that they might bulldose (sp) some of the houses. I mean, we have a two-story, our house might still be there. But then my mom said that they my dad wouldn't let anything happen to it, so I was relieved.

Yeah i don't know if anybody else knows. But business owners are going back to there places to see what is up. They are starting to rebuild. They said when finally it is over with they are going to set up a dusk till dawn curfew for the city.

Margarita
09-18-2005, 02:37 PM
Yeah, the French Quarter is back in business. Sorta....but they're worried if another storms hits, that the levees are still fragile and might flood really badly again and the all business owners are there.

Aww your dad is going to New Orleans. I hope he stays safe.I hope your house is okay. :)
My dad is going to work near Harvey for his company everyday. I worry about him but he knows how to stay safe.

I am okay. I miss my family though. They are still in Mississippi trying to get insurance and stuff like that but I am in AL staying with an uncle and going to college.

Margarita
09-18-2005, 02:51 PM
Aww, I'm sorry Jess. Its really hard to be seperated from your family during this. I hope college is goin good for you. School's going good for me. Homecoming was yesterday. We won!!! Yay!! 49-0, I was really amazed. How's your house? Do you have a lot of damage?

Kari
09-18-2005, 03:02 PM
I hope your dad and your whole family is alright, sweetie.

I finally donated together with my dad...his business adds one dollar for every dollar you give and I thought it'd be more effective that way.

Margarita
09-18-2005, 03:05 PM
Thanks Kari. That's awesome how yall are donating. :D

Kari
09-18-2005, 03:10 PM
It's the least we can do...I wish though, I could do something that directly helps you.

Margarita
09-18-2005, 03:21 PM
I really appreciate the offer, but we've been doing better than others. I mean we have the essentials, its just the things that mean a lot to us like photo albums and things that my dad made are what we really want. :( My grandma asked my uncle to try to get back to her house to get my grandpa's things that he made, cause he died a couple of years ago. Hopefully my dad can save some stuff, but the things that my mom really liked were all downstairs. I'll update yall whem he calls. :)

christy86
09-18-2005, 11:16 PM
Eh.

a storm might hit here.

cat 3. It really isn't needed here because of the evacuees. They will freak.

Oh yeah, hurricane rita hitting here. how great.

Margarita
09-20-2005, 04:45 PM
Yeah, we're worried bout Rita. The levees aren't ready for this. We're gonna flood like when Katirna hit again.

christy86
09-20-2005, 04:57 PM
I don't think Rita is gonna hit New Orleans. It already has Texas on it's eye. Our family is gonna go buy a generator..so we can have fresh food in our refrigerator...

All the schools are already closing starting tomorrow. and through next week.

This really is out of hand, when we had a hurricane back in school they made us go.

Margarita
09-20-2005, 04:59 PM
I know, but we're gonne get the east of it. My dad's on the phone with my mom. I heard roof damage and the door was opened. Its not looking too good.

A foot upstairs. My sketchbook and my journals and the stuff under my bed. Oh my God!! How could this happen??!! Its so hard. I'm trying not to cry, cause I can't see the keyboard. Oh my God!!

christy86
09-20-2005, 05:05 PM
I hope not. It is the last thing you need now. But I do doubt it will harm you that bad. IT says i'm getting the worst east part. New orleans isn't...
It has the same path as Hurricane Carla...it's gonna be a cat 4...

Margarita
09-20-2005, 05:08 PM
They're evacuating New Orleans though. I'm so upset.

BellaBlack
09-20-2005, 06:43 PM
Oh God..we just got over Hurricane Katrina.I am torn between mentioning anything to my mum..we have relatives in FL!I also have a friend who lives there :(

Sorry about your house Margaret :crying:

Margarita
09-20-2005, 06:49 PM
Thanks Bella. You should call your relatives and your friend. Gosh, I miss the South!! :crying: I used to think hurricanes were fun, but now I absolutely dread them. I'm trying to cheer myself up with the HP threads. :)

Andrew

Can i get the links to all the legit places to donate again? I'm saving a little bit on the side again, but i wanna spread the donation; donated to Red Cross last time, want to donate somewhere else this time... or should I just give it to Red Cross again?

christy86
09-20-2005, 09:14 PM
ME too, i use think hurricanes and tropical storms were a time to go running in the rain.
They are evacuating New Orleans incase some rain bands or what not comes.

The stores here are selling out of everything. Galveston will be the next New Orleans...20feet storm surges. League City DESTROYED...when Rita hits....Please pray it doesn't come near me and goes more south or weakens.....

EDIT-

BE PREPARED YOUR GAS PRICES WILL BE HIGHER.

BellaBlack
09-21-2005, 02:54 PM
Oh God,I hope they don't hit again! My family will be even more affected than Hurricane Katrina :crying:

I expected the gas prices to go higher.

christy86
09-21-2005, 03:25 PM
I went out today to 9. YES 9 GAS STATIONS. All of them are overpacked. 4 of them sold out of gas. I went all around town to find gas. I waited only one car, then this lady wanted to cut me off. So i went out and told her "no way ma'am..i was here first" and she skidded off.... THE TOWN IS NUTS. We're gonna plywood our home....

175mph winds...help us...

BellaBlack
09-21-2005, 07:25 PM
9 bucks?! That's crazy..

I hope you're okay Christy..don't scare me..

christy86
09-21-2005, 09:15 PM
I'm super scared because my parents arent in great shape...neither am i.
No 9 stations. Prices are 3$ a gallon.

plus im hypoglecmic and i will pass out...

BellaBlack
09-22-2005, 02:58 PM
Wow,that's all crazy. You live in FL?It looks like Louisiana and Texas are gonna get hit hard..either way,I am praying for you and your fam :(

BellaBlack

Summer_Roberts2
09-23-2005, 08:36 PM
Has anyone's school had any projects to raise money for Katrina relief? We've had a few donation days, and overall we've probably raised about 9,000 dollars. I hope it helps!

*Ashlee*
09-23-2005, 08:38 PM
i work at tim hortons and all the money ppl donate daily to the kids foundation is goin to katrina victims

BellaBlack
09-23-2005, 08:41 PM
..are you serious Jill!Wow!Your school is great. My school has pretty much done the same thing but I don't know how much money we've raised.I contributed a couple of bucks.

Margarita
09-23-2005, 10:22 PM
Well at my school in Illinois, all the homerooms designed a shirt and the way you voted was put money in these cartons. All proceeds go to Red Cross. I think we got like $4,000.

oclover24
09-24-2005, 11:33 AM
^4,000? That's great. Our school raised about 1,000 dollars over the course of a week. Yesterday, my AP World teacher let us watch the breaking news about the levee breaking on CNN. We were all just sitting there, watching the TV, stunned.

Rudolph
09-24-2005, 11:33 AM
Oops..sorry Christy.

Oh Jeanette.I wish I could make you feel better. What kind of questions did your social worker ask that made you cry so much?

just stuff about my house and my dad. this is all so overwhelming. i'm gonna see her once a week during study hall. i hope i don't cry next time.

BellaBlack
09-24-2005, 05:20 PM
Aw I hope you don't cry either Jeanette hun *Hugs Jeanette*

At my school we have an ASB (I don't know if you guys know what that is) and members just went around the school collecting money in tubs..that sounds ghetto but we did it

Rudolph
09-28-2005, 06:19 PM
yeah i went to go see her again yesterday and i didn't cry!! yay! lol, that's an acomplishment for me. my friends call her my buddy. "are you gonna go see your buddy today?"

My grandparents have decided to go back to Louisisana. They're leaving Saturday. I think its too soon. I think my mom thinks so too because she's said my dad was stunned when he came to our house. He was paralyzed in her words. I asked him how bad and he said you can't even recognize it. My grandparents get upset really easily, especially my grandmother. I wish someone would drive down with them, but there's no one. :(

BellaBlack
09-28-2005, 08:32 PM
Wow Margaret..you double posted alot.Oh well,it doesn't matter:)

I'm really sorry about your grandparents.I think they should wait too but I wish them luck.

I just saw some really horrible pictures of a church near my house. My friend Mike took them and was kinda makin jokes about it. It made me laugh sometimes but other times I was thinking, why is he saying that? His office is sooo messed up. Tne pews in the church are all thrown around. Its just terrible. If anyone wants to check it out- here's the link (http://www.gethsemane-lutheran.com/yourti100741.html)

Sonni
10-06-2005, 08:47 AM
wow.... this pictures are really horrible. it looks really scary to see the interior of a destroyed house/church/whatever because it's way more destroyed than the outside. in the news, you only see the damage outside (at least it's that way over here).

christy86
10-06-2005, 08:28 PM
I saw those pictures on tv. Our news people went inside peoples homes. Mold has destroyed everything. This really is a terrible thing. I feel so bad for everybodies homes. :(

Margarita
10-09-2005, 02:26 PM
I finally got the pictures up. Pictures here (http://photobucket.com/albums/b323/margaretiscool/katrina/). It was so hard to look at these. My brother said he's at peace now, but I'm still thinking up more stuff that I left down there.

Sonni
10-09-2005, 02:42 PM
OH MY GOD! That's probably the most horrible thing I've ever seen since the beginning of Katrina, because I know you...
I'm SO sorry!

Margarita
10-09-2005, 02:52 PM
Thanks Sonni. On top of all the looting and people dying, the houses, I think, are the worst. My dad was just paralyzed when he got there.

Thanks Bella. :) Its been hard for us. I could see the pain in my mom's face when she was looking at the pictures. My grandparents left here a couple of days ago and they're safe back in New Orleans. My mom got emailed this thing and I thought it described us perfectly.

You know you are a Katrina victim when .

Your only bank deposits are marked "FEMA."

You have lived in 3 different cities in the last month.

You can distinguish between flood and wind damage.

Your ear has stayed hot from your cell phone use.

Your day is spent on hold or talking to recordings.

You have been on vacation for 1 month and have not seen or done a damn thing.

You respond "None" to the blanks for address, phone, or occupation on questionnaires.

Your friends now live across the United States, and you know where each resides.

You hug anyone who hails from New Orleans, including strangers.

You can quote the water levels of Lakeview, Lakewood South, Uptown, 9th Ward and Metairie.

You no longer pay electricity, water, cable or any other home-related bills.

Your clothes all smell like Grandma's attic.

You look for mold before using any of your possessions.

Your email list has quadrupled in size.

You know the rates of U-Haul and storage facilities across the south.

You have spent hours bumper to bumper in traffic to go nowhere.

You have gained an uncanny knowledge of government assistance programs from Red Cross to unemployment.

You are proud of your Louisiana Purchase Card that you waited 6 hours for to get free groceries for three months

Your social conversations center on the details of demolition, mold removal, and roof repair.

You have worn the same Old Navy t-shirt for three weeks.

You now have your hair color formula in your address book.

You have 3 to 7 people living in an apartment smaller than the one you rented when you first married.

Your patience is thin.

You have a new fridge and probably hauled it home on a truck yourself instead of waiting for delivery

You have cussed out anyone who does not respond to your requests.

You are tired of hearing about the problems in the Superdome and Convention Center - you have your own problems.

You alternate between feeling like screaming, crying, laughing uncontrollably, and jumping from the 10th floor of your Red Cross donated hotel room.

You can no longer make logical decisions since nothing seems logical anymore.

You realize what a great life you had with a crew of great friends.

You realize how comfortable you were.
And you just want to be comfortable again!

Hey yall! I haven't been on in awhile. Nothing really new with me. My dad's just basically cleaning the house out and throwing most of it out. I had this dream last night. We got to go back home and the second i got their I ran upstairs. My room looked ok. My dad had put all my stuff in my closet and it was all fine. But the light started hurting my eyes and I ran out of the room and as I ran down the stairs, it changed to my cousin's house. I think the dream was sorta of a sign. None of it true about my house but its some kinda sign. I've been thinking a lot about it.

I am going to a thankyou party on Friday for people who helped with Hurricane Katrina.
We had a place near my house that people took clothes and stuff too and I helped sort it out. I really enjoyed helping people brought so much stuff I couldn't believe my eyes its was so great. I first put little cute sayings on stuffed animals and then later on I sorted clothes. I am just so glad people really came together and donated to helpe those people. I know other states did the same type thing and they are awesome too.

I haven't been on for awhile cause I was in Texas at a church retreat. It was fun seeing all my friends that i haven't seen since August. On the last day we were there, they had an offering for Katrina victims and this lady asked our youth group to go up and introduce ourselves. I didn' think it would be that hard. Except they showed a bunch of pictures and that was it. We were sitting there, bawling our eyes out, watching our homes get destroyed all over agian. It was very hard for us. I didn't think I would cry. I try to keep it in, but that time I couldn't do it. It was soo hard. And when we got up, everyone faces had changed. We couldn't stop crying. Then, they asked for people to give the offering and everyone got up and hugged us. It was felt good, if that even makes sense. No one has actaully been that nice to me. I mean people have donated, but they've never came up and hugged us. They kept telling me it would be alright. People I didn't even know. They asked what I needed and I couldn't think of anything at that moment. But what I didn't realize was that, that was what I needed. A hug. It sounds so simple, but thats all I really needed.

BellaBlack
11-16-2005, 07:23 PM

I miss you too Bella. I'm gonna try to come on more, since next week we don't have school.

While we were at the retreat, my friend read this bible verse and it gave me the chills.

For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Jehovah. For thus saith Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end.And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

-Jeremiah 29:9-14

BellaBlack
11-17-2005, 07:01 PM
Wow..that's a good verse.I'm not that religious, but I understand why it would give you the chills :)

I might get to go down to New Orleans for Christmas! i was actually dreading Christmas. It would be very depressing. Everyone soo happy cause its Christmas and all their family would come into town and they would get tons of presents. It was gonna make me miss home so badly but now, i won't miss it, cause I'm goin there. I mean sure I'll be missing the way things used to be, but I'll still be with my family. That's all that really matters.

We're going back to New Orleans after New Years. Today was my last day of school. Its was sad. Some of the people that got me through this have to say goodbye and we might not see each other again. It was a bittersweet day. We might come back up if my mom can't find a job. We might also not have a computer, so I'll be out of touch with a lot of people. I have no idea how we will fit everything in our little van. But thats the least of our worries, lol.

BellaBlack
12-21-2005, 08:22 PM
Margaret--Are you still going to have the same mailing address before you move? I sent you and Jeannete an Xmas card (Karins gave me your addy I haven't told anyone don't worry) but I'm sure it'll be there before New Year's Day.

I glad your going back. I hope everything in your old home will get fixed. We all  you. BTW, I bought an Hurricane Katrina effort bracelet..I think the money went to a organization..it's purple and I'm wearing it right now.

We're in Louisiana!! Its great here. It feels good to be home, but home ain't looking too good. There's so much trash everywhere, its crazy. We're going to our house tomorrow and I'm gonna try to save some of my things that my parents haven't thrown away yet. I went to my uncles house and they have a FEMA trailer set up for my grandma. Her trailer is pretty cool. We haven't got ours yet but i hope ours is that roomy.
