Film director Joseph "McG" McGinty is waxing Poe-etic about the new, otherworldly themed drama series Supernatural, that he had a hand in making.
Supernatural, a ghoulish ghost story about two estranged brothers -- played by Gilmore Girls' Jared Padalecki and Smallville's Jensen Ackles -- who prowl the backroads of rural America in a battered '67 Chevy Impala. It debuts today at the vanguard of a parade of new dramas about otherworldly spills, chills and thrills.

Padalecki and Ackles play restless Gen-Y souls on a quest to find their missing father, an obsessive ghost hunter who disappears one night after searching for the cause of his wife's haunting demise years earlier.

Even before the first hour is over, with its ghostly visitations by apparitions, ethereal beings and bad-tempered back-roads law- enforcement officers, it's obvious that Supernatural isn't going to be anything like Gilmore Girls. Padalecki and Ackles' characters' names, Dean and Sam, are a conscious homage to Dean and Sal from Jack Kerouac's On the Road.

"It's a show about American folklore and urban legends," explains Supernatural's creator and svengali figure, Eric Kripke, who is executive-producing the series in Vancouver with McG, together with Miracles' Richard Hatem and The X-Files' John Shiban. "It revolves around the idea that every town has a really great, terrifying ghost story."
