On NBC's "Surface," sea monsters pop out of the water to menace humans. And characters on the WB's "Supernatural" peel off their skin and burst into flames.

These and other new dramas, laden with the latest computer-generated visual effects, are transforming television programming lineups. With versatile and inexpensive advances in technology and viewers who are increasingly watching on big, high-definition screens, TV studios can now afford to produce shows with imaginative visuals week after week without blowing their budgets.

Networks will roll out even more stunning visual effects for the November "sweeps," one of four each year where ratings are used to set local ad prices. Storms will pulverize the Great Pyramid on "Category 7: The End of the World" on Viacom Inc.'s CBS while a phantom band of bikers will prowl "Night Stalker" on Walt Disney Co.'s ABC. On "Supernatural," poltergeists hurl knives at the main characters.

"Viewers are demanding we deliver these kinds of effects," says David Janollari, president of entertainment at Time Warner Inc.'s WB. "People are bombarded with incredibly sophisticated effects by movies, and DVDs have brought those effects to television. We have to deliver the same thing to compete."
