I would start seperate threads for each party but I don't think there are enough Brits around to bother
I'm Labour, btw, but I can't vote til next year :)
Can someone change the title to 'the British Politic-y thread' please? :)
Go Tony! wooo :applause:

FB doesn't seem to have alot of regular brits so one thread is enough
I'm a Labour party supporter myself but recently alot of people have turned Lib-dems because of some of the recent decisions Blair has made reguarding Iraq.
I cant vote either yet i'm not sure i'll want to either.

I'm Labour but then the pickings are a little slim political wise anyway :) My parents support both Labour and the Green Party but I'm too young to vote :(
I dont vote but I dont like Tony. I dont know what political party I'm gonna follow when I can vote either yet!

Faith
11-19-2005, 01:45 AM
3... kind of...
The main ones are -
Labour (currently in power, head honcho is Tony Blair)
Conservatives (currently have two guys fighting out to lead them)
Liberal Democrats (currently have a ickle cutesy leader! aww!)

I don't belong in this thread, but Tony Blair on CBB? Or BCC is it channel here in the US. He rocks lol. I remember seeing him in the courthouse discussing british politics. I love his accent. I thought that was great too when he apologized. Props to him.

I think it's sad that a police woman got shot doing her job. :nohope:

I remember the time when Bush came to visit England and everyone was protesting about it and the protesters knocked down this huge balloon figure of him  Blair should have noticed then that his people don't like him much anymore because he got involved in Iraq. Why dont Bush and Blair both just run their own country properly before trying to sort another country out.
God England's cities are like New york now with loads of violence and stuff.
everwoodisfab
11-24-2005, 12:06 PM
OMG I know, violence rates are rising, though they do seem to be trying to do something about it- more policemen on the beat etc. Even here in a tiny little suburb of Stoke-On-Trent :). The police seem to be more obviously armed aswell, like I was at Heathrow Airport in the summer and we were queing to submit our baggage and there was this policeman there with a massive rifle, it really scared me but then I guess thats the point.
Faith
11-24-2005, 12:08 PM
I live in Bradford where the police woman got shot, I walk by were she got shot all the time, it surreal... it was scary that night, I was on my way to my friends 18th and there were sombre armed police everywhere...
Krazy
11-24-2005, 12:10 PM
At least the police are doing something about it but i dont think a few big guns will make the problem go away.
I'm not sure if any of you have heard but there's this new policy in England that you can drink for 24 hours a day. This is supposed to have less of a rush in clubs and pubs over the weekend but aren't they asking for more trouble? It's a very high risk.
I was in Bradford the other day and police cars were everywhere. My uncle who is a policeman used to train that woman :(

I really dont like the longer opening times for pubs and clubs, there is a pub across the way from me and its already bad enough for noise and stuff without the late opening hours.

My dad knows a guy who normally walks the route she died on, but he was on holiday for 2 weeks... Its not his fault at all but wouldnt you feel awful? :(

Who is going to leave a pub to cause trouble?
Krazy
11-27-2005, 12:54 PM
Well some liquor stores are staying open 24/7 so alcochol can be consumed walking down a street so that won't be a issue in not wanting to leave the pub. Street crimes are the worst sort too.
Faith
11-27-2005, 12:58 PM
I don't think it will really effect it.

24 hours is... odd... maybe a few hours later because I hate getting packed out so early, but who is going to the pub at 4.30? :)
ME ME ME!! Well actually to be completely truthful I can't enter another pub past 4am (it's a rule here in Nijmegen) but I can stay however long the owner wants to keep serving me. I have been out till 8am many a times. Awww good times, somehow walking home when its light has a weird appeal to it.
But on the other hand I have to say that Dutch people in general don't go out until 10/11pm. My ex-boyfriend is Irish and when we first started going out I really had to teach him that he didn't need to get all drinks in before 11pm. My first time in Ireland last orders was shouted at 10.30pm and I was like "what the f**k?" Then I got three drinks shoved into my hands and I was like "urmmm."
I don't know a lot about British politics, since I am not British, but I always thought Tony Blair was a cool dude. Though I was not a fan of his war participation.
But still I have high respect for the man.

Urmm just to stay on topic I should say something about Tony now. Tony talks with his hands a lot. Don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, it's just a fact...like those 8 million bicycles in Bejing.

I would love to drink in a British pub some time...but from what is in the media Britain as a whole has pretty much an alcohol problem.

I don't know my limits, but my limits usually know me. o.O
Okay an actual participation in the debate:
I think pubs should be allowed to be open as long as they wish too. It seems to work alright here. Okay we have the occasional fight (outside the Irish pub  ), but in general people behave themselves properly (personally I do the drunken but not the disorderly, I always smile sweetly at the cops which seems to help). But I have been to Ireland and England and the idea that some of the people I've met there have the ability to stay out even longer (and get even drunken) scares the living daylights out of me. I've nearly been in fights because some girl would think I was eye-balling her. (Which I wasn't, I was just cross-eyed from the booze.) But there was just no reasoning with her. Of course I don't want to judge an entire nation (or two) on the bad experiences I've had, but it does shape my view on 24/7 opening hours in England. So I don't think it such a great idea..except for Gemma of course. She rules, but she should come over here anyway. For some good drinking till sunrise. :D
Re-reading my post I realize I started out saying one thing and then said the complete opposite. Interesting...

I like this thread :) it's good talking about non-american things for a change.
As far as pubs go, I'm on the fence with their closing times. I make a point never to stay out till daylight. It used to be fun when I was younger but it's just embarrassing these days (damn I'm getting old). I've been up (sober) at 7am ON A THURSDAY and seen drunk people walking the streets looking for more alcohol. Not a pretty picture.
The only times I'd ever stay up till morning is when I'm on holiday (especially during New Years) and when most of the city are partying all night (like the recent Lions Tour). Any other time... not good.

I suspect we will have a new Education minister before to long.
Sex offenders working in schools is still grabbing the headlines and doesn't seem to be going away, new cases are being reported and I think quite rightly so. Parents need to feel they are leaving their kids in as safe an environment as possible. Our children are the most precious things we have and we shouldn't take any unnecessary risks with them.
I was listening to a radio phone in a couple of days ago about this subject and the question was something like should sex offenders be given a second chance and be permitted to work with children. A guy phoned in who actually was/ is a sex offender and said no they shouldn't be allowed. Very brave of him to do this I thought, his reasoning was that an alcoholic can go years without taking a drink and then one day take a drink and start a slippery slope. He said the same thing goes with sex offenders.
I hope someone within the powers that be of british politics was listening to this too :ponder:

Oh yeah what's with Ruth Kelly or whatever her name is letting paedophiles work as teachers. I mean it's just like throwing the children at them to molest. ^I agree, it was a major mistake that should never have happened.
I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were talking about Gordon Browns suggestion of a National British day, I thought it was a bit pointless but then people were suggesting that he was doing it to seem patriotic so that people would see him in a better light and be accepting of him as the next prime minister. People were saying that because he was Scottish he wouldnt be seen as a good PM. I found that really odd as Scotland is part of Britain and they were all saying he didnt want to be PM anyway.

I can sympathise with them for fighting for the right to spend more time with their children, but there's a right and wrong way to go about it and they've definately been going about it the wrong way! Kidnapping a child so that the famous father can know how it feels to be without his child  How could that have seemed like a good idea to someone?

Blimey what's goin on with the lib dems at the mo? They all seem to have confessions to make
Whereas honesty is the best policy I don't think recent reports are doing them many favours

^It really annoyed me that everyone is acting as if the fact that he has had gay relationships will make him any less of a politician. Why should it matter?

Nobody is really making a big deal out of it. The guy was just denying it then says yes i have had sexual relationships with men. WTF didn't he just admit it before rather then keep on saying i aren't gay. Then say i am. He made the issue bigger nobody else.

Off the above topic here but who is voting for Galloway for the next election??
:hehe: :hehe:

As regards the lib dems and for that matter all politicians I don't give a toss who's gay, who's not, who likes a drink who doesn't or whatever else may be going on in their personal life. Honesty, now that is different to me because it boils down to how trustworthy they are and that is important!:)
George Galloway
Oh my god!!! I can't even look at the guy let alone vote for him :scream:
He's horrid and all that pussy cat stuff just made me feel sick :puke:

Education minister Ruth Kelly has been hit by an egg! A member of 'Real Fathers for Justice' threw the egg at her whilst shouting "justice for fathers not paedophiles" :ninja:
Not the best way to point out that the powers that be are not getting the priorities of the nation in the right order but it's a helluva piccie ;)
Actually I must confess that I feel sorry for her when I see the piccie but I sympathise with good fathers who are not able to spend much time with kids that they love too

What does everyone think of the smoking ban?
torypops
02-15-2006, 06:56 AM
I'm speaking from a non smoker's point of view - I think it's good news and hope that the same action is taken in Wales too
I'm sure smokers will be outraged but ya know what if they want to continue smoking they can it just needs to be somewhere that will affect their own health only and not the health of people who choose the healthier option i.e. not smoking.
Maybe now would be a good time to boost the help needed for people to give up the habit. :)

I'm with the ban, i mean smoking is unfair on the people around them. I mean do they know how many people die every year because of passive smoking? Though i'm sure Tony might have lost himself some voters

It's gonna be interesting to see how the threat of bird flu will affect British politics. I'm sure that when it does arrive there'll be some bitching about who should be doing what and why hasn't so and so done this or that!:nohope:

^It's all that anyone ever talks about now! I switch on the news and it's all thats there. Hasn't it been found in captive birds in France now? It's only a matter of time until it gets to the UK
torypops
02-26-2006, 11:49 AM
yeah Ithink you're right it's only a matter of time before it reaches the uk :ebraise:
I think that people are gonna totally freak out when the time comes. It's scary stuff and I just think that if the government do something to make sure we are all informed well it will help to reassure a lot of us :)

there have been no transfers of the virus to humans in europe yet ave there? So we're safe as of now lol
torypops
03-02-2006, 07:14 AM
I think there were human deaths in Turkey but they caught it from contact with infected birds. We only need to start worrying if the virus mutates and can be passed from human to human and as yet that has not happened. I think we just need to be aware and cautious about not being in contact with infected birds.
I heard something the other day about a cat possibly dying of the virus and thinking there was that the cat had eaten an infected bird but I dont know if it was confirmed. People may need to keep their cats in doors when the virus arrives in the UK.
I'm sure that the government will have some sort of public awareness drive when we need it :)
