I don't really follow politics... but I am hearing mixed reactions for Stephen Harper.

Personally, I knew conservative party was going to win (although iw as rooting for NDP). Conservative was probably my next choice though.

Me i hate it. He wants Canada to become the 52nd State for the United States. For one We are Canada. We are not the States. and Nothing against the states but I want Canada to stay Canada and not United States of America. Also the first thing he is going to do probably is get rid of the same sex Marriages. WELL HELLO. This is something I feel should not be touched. But what am I to say. I voted I have made my voice heard so Now i can bitch. If you havent Voted I dont think you have the right. As far as Im concerned. Yes you have the right but if especially if you are under the age of minority (18) but if you are not and did not vote. then its a waste to go and say anything when your votes could have counted.

Oh and also for the fact. they want Privatised Health Care. Now think of it this way. How many people can not afford health care if they take away OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). As it is there are alot of companies that do not offer benefits including health care. So what are the people who dont have the money to do. They go to the hospital and say Oh I HAVE VISA. THAT IS NOT CANADA.

i could NOT have said it better! i am so not impressed with this government, minority or not!! i do not agree with Harper and him wanting to:
-join war(for the most part)
-take away a womens right to decide if she wants/needs an abortion
-take away the same-sex marriage law
-ignore our charter of RIGHTS!
-pull out of kyoto!!!!
-pull out of the agreement arranged between martins government and the aboriginal groups of canada!

Harper won because of the scandal! people could not see past that..and now..as you said, we are going to become the 52nd state so to speak...

If everyone who loved the liberals could have seen that NDP was left wing just like Liberals, and voted NDP. WE would not be pissed. LMAO... I sure voted NDP lmao... and i, #%)&%*()#^)*(@^$*(&#^*(V (_*&*()#& *(#%&#^( *U&#&*)%^#(& )_#*(_%& #* #*(_ _Q#(_ *&#$R%) if that doesnt help any. lmao

I said to myself if we become Conservative... Im going to finish my studies and move to europe. lol. I dont think I will. But still.

*Ashlee*
01-24-2006, 06:30 PM
i dont blame you for being so mad lol but like you said, we voted so we can bitch all we want!! and dont move away :)

~Roger¤Davies~
01-24-2006, 07:30 PM
i wouldnt... i have too much here. I mean okay i could go to europe and be with my moms family. but mmmm. I love canada. I am canadian. and we will survive.

its predicted next year conservatives will end up with a majority gov't..then we might have to move!

Ah damn....

You know, it's really bad enough that I have to worry about the damned Bloc and PQ taking over because of separatism, but now with the conservatives. If I could've voted, I would've, but I only turn 18 in a little under 3 months.

This bites. We don't need to be Americanized, we're quite fine on our own.

01-24-2006, 08:20 PM
HA im crossing my fingers for NDP for every election i can be a part of. They have simular views of the liberals but without the past of having money "dissapear" on them.

Kaylan
01-24-2006, 09:45 PM
Wow there's a thread for our little election? lol

Well, i've bitched a lot with Ashlee in another thread. I for one am not fond of the Conservative party. Personally i'm left of centre and have always supported the NDP. Am very happy to see the party make gains! Esp here in BC, the only province where the Conservatives actually lost seats from 2004 election.

Interesting that the Conservatives failed to win any seats in the 3 biggest cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

01-24-2006, 10:06 PM
I know it sucks!! I guess i had never thought of the NDP that way, i mean i knew that, but it just didnt click! i voted liberal because honestly, the scandal sucked but i knew i couldnt sleep knowing i voted for the conservatives...especially if they start taking away everything this country stands for! our rights and freedoms!! it isnt right! and i still think a huge majority of canada was blind in this election and let the scandal issue get the best of them!! guh! it makes me so mad, his picture on the front page of my paper! SHEESH lol

we should form a government! over take them...though ive not the slightest clue how to do it...maybe steven was on to something...time to move lol

Kaylan
01-24-2006, 11:00 PM
It never crossed my mind to vote conservative. There were a few days where i thought about voting Liberal. the whole strategic voting thing. but in the end decided against it, realized that i would only be happy knowing that i voted for what i believe in.

Time to move? lol, no no. we'll survive. the longer the minority government works out, it'll give time for next election. maybe by that time the liberals would have sorted things out and can regain power.

*Ashlee*
01-24-2006, 11:03 PM
all we can do is hope!

i think thats what matters is that people vote for what they believe in!! generally, i think those of age should just vote!! only 64% of eligible voters voted...thats sad! but those people cant really complain :) they will but they shouldnt be able to

Kaylan
01-24-2006, 11:11 PM
64% voter turnout is a sad statistic. At least it was more than last time, though I don't know what it was last time. It always frustrates me when I talk to some of my friends and they don't vote. I've never missed an election big or small since i've been able to vote. I try to persuade them to go, but they just are either too lazy or just don't care.

*Ashlee*
01-24-2006, 11:12 PM
i believe last time 60.4% lol this is just not good!! think of the difference those voters may have made...hmmmmm, i think voting should be required like in the old days

As I stated earlier, I'm glad that Stephen Harper won. I agree with lots of his beliefs. One of my podmates has had a sign on our pod door the past week saying to vote for Mr. Harper, and a few days ago, her friend came to her room and said, "But Stephen Harper is consorting with the enemy!" Um...wrong thing to say to a Canadian and American who are both big fans of George Bush and America. We both just looked at her and she backed off.

I agree with you guys that more people should exercise their right to vote. We are so blessed to be living in a land where we have this privilege -- why not use it?

I'm not in Canada, but the right guy won the election :)

~Roger¤Davies~
01-25-2006, 11:48 AM
Jon you are only saying that because your probably Pro Conservative for your own elections. But you see. Canada is not the states. We have things Different then the states. Canada is a VERY LIBERAL Country, while the USA is a very Conservative Country. and thats they way it should remain. I feel that I have come to a point where this has pissed me off soo much that I dont care now. I mean I do because all my rights for getting married to a man i love are going to be gone.

ALSO there is news that the Bloq Quebecois will be joining the Conservatives. THIS IS BAD. VERY BAD.

*Ashlee*
01-25-2006, 11:49 AM
What is happening to this country!? lol

WisteriaJ7
01-25-2006, 02:51 PM
Yes, I am aware of the fact that Canada is not the states, Roger-Davies. And, yes, you're right -- I am pro-Conservative. But I think this change will be good for Canada.

Hey, at least the Communist Party of Canada or the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada didn't win.

Edited to add: Whoops, I just realized that Roger-Davies was talking to Jon, not me. I read "Joy." Oh well, I'll keep what I had written, as that's what I believe.

Actually, I'm hoping America will not stay conservative. I'm not fond of the conservative ways either. I think it's quit disappointing for Canada that a conservative won in the very liberal country. What was this "scandal" all about anyway?

~Roger¤Davies~
01-25-2006, 04:51 PM
Umm what happened was with the liberals and this isnt the first time either. money had gone missing. there was one where the money paid to the government was paid back to the companie or something like that. it was bad. I wish I could help you out more... Im kinda busy with another paper on Human Resourse course... otherwise i would look it up... theres probably lots online if you Google it.

And from the Hospitality Point of view. The Conservatives will be a big problem. Hospitality and Tourism consist of Hospitals and stores. so if Taxes go up... or health care becomes privitised... needless to say i am AGAINST conservatives lol.. and im left wing... not as far as Liberal but Democratic

I don't agree with u guys that he wants to make canada into the Untied states. i think he wants to improve canada. Help us to get back to what we were founded on. Did u guys not hear his speech when he was elected. he said stuff like To make canada a better place, and stuff like that. to make it more equal and all and he said God Bless Canada.

I personally I am happy he got in and I was rooting for him. I think he will do some good things for the nation of Canada. Though he will mistakes along the way since No one is perfect.

of course he has to say that stuff in his speech lol he cant say "i think america is great and im about to start our transformation' lol i just think people may have jumped the gun by voting for him and his team without looking into the other options, all people knew is they were scared away from the liberals

Personally, I think this change will be beneficial to both countries, you do realize I said countries not states. The United States relationship with Canada hasn't been a nice one as many know and I think that him winning will create a stronger bond between us. I mean you guys wouldn't want to continue the hate now would you?

There is no hate Between Canada and the USA. So Jean Cretian and Paul Martin did not want to help Bush with the war. Of course. Canada is for Peace Keeping. Not war starting.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not happy with the way the election went:lol: But on the brightside, at least its only a minority government and not a majority like was being predicted. Hopefully this will keep things under control.

Did I actually just express my thoughts on politics?

*Ashlee*

*bravo* april :) and yes i think you may have let out a tiny bit of political insight on your behalf haha :) they are predicting it wll be a majority next year though

well there is discussion that the Bloq will be joining Harper aswell. Well i can see it UNFORTUNATLY as they are both extreem right wing. but then the Bloq can always say you know what Screw you Harper. I just hope they dont join. And everyone makes an alliance with NDP and the Liberals. lol. who wants to see Canada become like the USA. and The fact that Bush contacted Harper already doesnt surprise me. but also harper hasnt been sworn in to the house yet. That will probably be next month most likely.

*Ashlee*
01-25-2006, 09:51 PM
i think we are going to have a very bumpy year regardless

how many seats did the Bloc get??

~Roger¤Davies~
01-25-2006, 10:55 PM
an independant holds 1 seat
NDP holds 29 Seats
the Bloq holds 51 seats
Liberals hold 103 seats
Conservatives hold 124 seats

*Ashlee*
01-25-2006, 11:03 PM
AHH definitly dont want the bloc to join with conservative! wow! i didnt realize there were that many bloc haha oh boy

~Roger¤Davies~
01-26-2006, 01:36 PM
The problem is... that The Bloq is very conservative already, so they will not join the Liberals. meaning... DAMN THEM. lol

5 days ago, Canada was great..and now :( oh boy! i liked that we were such a free country!

i was watching on tv and rosie o'donnell agreed harper/conservatives being elected is sad for us and the world! it was a place where same-sex relations was ok, and now america will have no where to turn

Jon
01-26-2006, 06:16 PM
Though I live in America, I will make this comment about Canada. You all are worried about Canada being bad and so forth, well maybe if you look at your own numbers and realize Canada is more conservative than you all think. The country has spoken and like the USA, a conservative won, so maybe that's what the country wants, instead of just a few people who disaree like you all. Majority remember? Not minority.

*Ashlee*
01-26-2006, 06:29 PM
Yes that is true in a way but a lot of people i know, and other people around here know, only voted conservative because of the liberals and the scandal, not because of their actual belief in the government itself. it is sad that voting doesnt get done here on the basis of the actual platform of the candidates.

WisteriaJ7
01-26-2006, 07:03 PM
Lots of people I know voted conservative because of their platform, Ashlee.

Okay, Ashlee. :) I find myself in an interesting position, being an American who lives in Canada. I've been following the election and researched the parties so I could be informed and carry on intelligent conversation with all my Canadian friends. It has been fun.

I love the fact that in his speech, Stephen Harper thanked us for our prayers and said "God bless Canada."

I would of voted conservative anyway even if the liberals did not do some of the stuff they did while in goverment because the conservatives stand for what I believe in and I think will do our nation some good.

i could NOT have said it better! i am so not impressed with this government, minority or not!! i do not agree with Harper and him wanting to:

Harper won because of the scandal! people could not see past that..and now..as you said, we are going to become the 52nd state so to speak...

I completely agree with the both of you. Paul Martin sure did not do a very good job with the whole sponsorship scandal but atleast he wanted Canada to be Canada, an independant nation with things to be proud of.

Stephen Harper is only interested in making us seem bigger in George Bush's eyes. He wants to become the closest allie to the Americans only because they seem to be the current power in the world. Well guess what? Won't be for long........especially not with a guy like George in the lead.

I cannot wait until the next election when my generation can vote and we will show the conservative party.

They are the equivalent of the Republican party in the states and that is not something I support AT ALL.

Not to mention all the things that cheerbear mentioned that he plans to get rid of and change.

He supports pollution??? Puh-lease.........I wouldn't be surprised if we get another election in a year or two.....
