Entertainment today announced their intent to form a new 5th network, The CW, to be launched in the fall of 2006. The new broadcasting network will be a joint venture between Warner Bros. Entertainment and CBS Corporation, with each company owning 50%. In an important strategic move that secures major market distribution for The CW, it was announced that Tribune Broadcasting and the CBS Corporation's UPN affiliates have agreed separately to sign 10-year affiliation agreements with the new network.

The announcement for the new network was made today in New York by Leslie Moonves, President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS Corporation and Barry Meyer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Warner Bros. Entertainment. The Tribune Broadcasting affiliation agreements were announced by Dennis FitzSimons, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tribune Company.

At the same time, it was announced that CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment will cease operations of their respective networks -- UPN and The WB. The WB and UPN will continue to broadcast their respective network schedules independently until the fall.

The combination of Tribune's 16 major market stations and the 12 CBS-owned UPN major market affiliates give The CW instant coverage in 48% of the country. The remainder of the network's distribution system will be a combination of selected current UPN and The WB stations. The full distribution of the new network is expected to exceed 95% of the country.

Dawn Ostroff, currently President of UPN, will become President of Entertainment and John Maatta, currently Chief Operating Officer of The WB, will become Chief Operating Officer of The CW.

"This new network will serve the public with high-quality programming and maintain our ongoing commitment to our diverse audience," said Moonves. "It will clearly be greater than the sum of its parts, delivering excellent demographics to advertisers, and building a strong new affiliate body. Additionally, The CW will be able to draw from the creative talent and production resources from the top two television production studios in the business, while also seeking programming from all sources -- independent producers or other studios. With this move, we will be creating a viable entity, one well-equipped to compete, thrive and serve all our many publics in this multi-channel media universe. I'd like to thank Dawn Ostroff and all the talented people at UPN who have worked so hard. For many years UPN had financial losses, but under CBS's guidance, UPN has been able to effect a dramatic creative turnaround in a short period of time."

<img src="http://www.fanbolt.com/forums/images/avatars/Everwood/everwood09200504.jpg" width="85" height="85" align="right" hspace="5" vspace="5" border="0" alt="Gregory Smith, Emily VanCamp, Everwood, wb, cast">"This new network makes sound business and creative sense at every level -- for our viewers, advertisers, affiliates and for the shareholders of our companies," said Meyer. "Every key constituency of the network will now greatly benefit from this combination by being part of a highly rated, competitive, 5th broadcast network that is financially sound. As we form this new joint venture, we are also very pleased that in Dawn and John we have a management team of great creative vision and business acumen, one that will help to guide it successfully forward."

"This is a very exciting day for Time Warner and its shareholders in the creation of what we believe will be a very strong and viable 5th broadcast television network," said Jeff Bewkes, President & Chief Operating Officer of Time Warner. "This new network will have all the strategic asset value as an outlet for our programming that The WB presented us, but with a much firmer and more secure financial present and future. The credit goes to Barry Meyer, who continues to have tremendous vision and extraordinary business acumen as the long time leader of Warner Bros. Entertainment, a company that we are proud to say continues to be number one in its class."

"This is a great day for Tribune and its shareholders, and we are pleased to be the lead affiliate group of what will be a strong network," said FitzSimons. "We could not have had a better partner than Warner Bros. and Barry Meyer since we together launched The WB 11 years ago. Now, with the ownership role of CBS Corporation and the leadership of Leslie Moonves added to the mix, Tribune's viewers and advertisers will benefit from an even stronger programming lineup."

The 16 Tribune affiliated stations will include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Houston, Miami, Denver, St. Louis, Portland, Indianapolis, San Diego, Hartford, New Orleans and Albany. The 12 CBS Station Group television markets will include Philadelphia, San Francisco, Atlanta, Detroit, Tampa, Seattle, Sacramento, Pittsburgh, West Palm Beach, Norfolk, Oklahoma City and Providence. Together, these top two station groups cover the top 13 television markets, 20 of the top 25 television markets and have a total coverage area of more than 48% of the country.

The CW will incorporate The WB's current scheduling model, which consists of a 6 night-13 hour primetime lineup including Monday through Friday nights from 8-10 (EST/PST); Sundays from 7-10 (EST/PST); Sunday from 5-7 (EST/PST) outside of primetime as well as a Monday thru Friday afternoon block from 3-5 (EST/PST) and a 5-hour Saturday morning animation block. Together, the network will program 30 hours a week over seven days for its affiliated stations.

As the top creative executive, Ostroff will have available a line-up of some of the most popular programming that appeals to young adults in the media business. These programming assets range from hit reality series such as "America's Next Top Model" and The WB's "Beauty and the Geek," to hit dramas like The WB's "Smallville," "Gilmore Girls," "Supernatural," and UPN's "Veronica Mars" as well as UPN's hit comedies "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Girlfriends" and The WB's hit comedy "Reba." In addition the WWE's "Smackdown," which has been a mainstay at UPN, is expected to play a role in the schedule.

In addition, The CW will also broadcast the schedule of children's programming now known as Kids' WB!, a 5-hour original programming block on Saturday mornings from 7:00 a.m.-Noon, considered primetime for kids. Kids' WB! has been the broadcast network ratings champion since Fall 2000, capturing 16 consecutive sweep victories as the Number One Saturday morning kids' broadcaster.

All programming, marketing, scheduling, publicity and research functions will report to Ostroff.

Maatta will be responsible for the network's business operations. Bill Morningstar, The WB's Executive Vice President of Advertising Sales will become the head of sales reporting to Maatta. Other responsibilities that will report to Maatta include business affairs, network distribution, legal, finance and human resources.

Meyer added: "This could not have happened without the tremendous energy and talent of Bruce Rosenblum, President of Warner Bros. Television Group and Nancy Tellem at CBS who worked tirelessly and cohesively together to make this new network a reality. I would also like to thank Dennis FitzSimons, who saw the great opportunity this new network presents for the Tribune Company and who continues to be one of the great professionals and broadcasters in the business today."

Moonves added: "This idea becomes a reality only when a great station group like Tribune comes on board with us and delivers the powerful reach a new network requires. With formidable flagship Tribune stations in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, a great CBS line-up of owned and operated UPN stations, and strong affiliates from every available market, The CW launches as a strong competitor to the Big Four, and that's good for our business, for the viewing audience, and for free, over the air broadcasting. It is also good news for our shareholders, who will benefit from a much stronger business model, improved economics for our stations and new opportunities for our production businesses."

Note - If I loose Veronica Mars, Everwood, Gilmore Girls, or Supernatural... I'm going to be one unhappy webmistress! lol :)

It'll be really interesting to see which shows end up staying and which get cancelled. So far I'm just glad Supernatural is staying!

Emma
01-24-2006, 05:22 PM
Yeah Supernatural and Veronica mars are looking good from what I've heard.... but everwood isn't looking so great, I've got my fingers crossed though. I'll try to get a petition together in the next few days over at everwoodonline.com, so hopefully we can get their attention!

"The energy and imagination that Jamie Kellner and his team brought to The WB were unrivaled. This passion continued through the years as we overcame obstacles and faced the many challenges that came our way. As time went on, The WB became an excellent partner with Warner Bros. Television, and through such programming as "Smallville," "Gilmore Girls," and "Everwood"; as well as "The Jamie Foxx Show," "Parenthood," "The Wayans Brothers" and "One Tree Hill," created invaluable -assets- for our library from which our company will benefit for years to come. In addition, the ever-popular Kids' WB!, home to "Pokemon," "Yu-gi-oh" and "The Batman," will continue to air on The CW and remain an important part of our new venture."

^That was taken from an article, so I think those shows are looking good too.

its awesome that supernatural and veronica mars are staying, we in aus only started to get them this summer but OTH and everwood! no!!!!! but smallville and gilmore girls are safe which is great also! yay! i dont wanna loose Oth OR EVERWOOD!

Kay
01-24-2006, 05:32 PM
They cant take OTH away...they just can't. Its not fair :(

Emma
01-24-2006, 05:39 PM
I've heard that OTH and Everwood are no goes, but we're not going to know for sure till May. I am really surprised to hear that about OTH, I find it really hard to believe that one would be cancelled, but Everwood, it's not doing as great this year, so I wouldn't be too surprised. Though I will be really REALLY upset. lol. Fraz works at Tribune Broadcasting, and she posted in the spoiler forum saying as of 4pm, the word around the office was the following for the lineup:

Monday Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends, Reba, Related
Tuesday Gilmore Girls with a show or pilot GG anchor the night
Wed. Veronica Mars with a show or pilot VM anchor the night
Thursday Smallville, Supernatural
Friday Wrestling

10pm news on this network leaving 8-10pm primetime to fill with programs.

Kay
01-24-2006, 05:44 PM
who needs Wrestling I ask you?

But what about shows that are meant to be starting still..like Bedford Dairies?

please please please let OTH come back...this night was so good & then *sigh*

Jon
01-24-2006, 05:44 PM
Honestly, if Everwood gets cancelled, I will not be surprised. I've been expecting Everwood to be cancelled for awhile now. OTH is a little more surprising.

In response to who needs wrestling, wrestling on TV make-up some of the highest ratings on TV. So the TV networks need wrestling.

Andrew
01-24-2006, 05:45 PM
Kick ass!!!!!! "The Wayans Brothers" are coming back! I remember in junior high during summer break, I would have to wait until 2/3 o'clock in the morning to catch the syndicated episodes

Another question: In my area, UPN is on Ch. 9 and WB is on Ch. 11. Which channel will "CW" take? :ponder:

who needs Wrestling I ask you?

*ahem*... I watch wrestling: "Smackdown!" and "Raw" (Hey we all have guilty pleasures)

Jon
01-24-2006, 05:47 PM
Here in NorCal UPN is 12, and WM is 13 ;) So I hope 12 since I'm not a fan of 13....

Kay
01-24-2006, 05:47 PM

One could look at it as a way to spread violence and put evil fighting thoughts into childrens minds :D

omg I really hope One Tree Hill stays!!

Im happy VM does, and I hope supernatural does too because of Jared  I will have to watch that show soon though

Ashlyn
01-24-2006, 05:54 PM
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

*screams*

Well, at least GG made it. :(

tommygirl887
01-24-2006, 05:55 PM
I really am hoping One Tree Hill stays. Is Supernatural doing better than OTH??

Ashlyn
01-24-2006, 05:56 PM
I think it was... as of last ratings.

OTH is doing terribly.

Kay
01-24-2006, 05:58 PM
I dont get why it is? Season 2 was so much worse than three and no one mentioned bad ratings then!

Andrew
01-24-2006, 06:02 PM
In response to OTH... face it; while GG and Everwood have some critical praise behind it, OTH doesn't.

Another question... who takes over The News? Journalists from UPN or WB? :ponder:

Ashlyn
01-24-2006, 06:20 PM
While that may be true, it doesn't make it any less heartbreaking for the hardcore fans.

Kay
01-24-2006, 06:30 PM
+ GG & Everwood both had bad seasons..wasnt it a season or 2 ago when GG was remoured to be cancelled..OTH just needs a good chance!

stupid rating things!

sethsangel123
01-24-2006, 06:33 PM
i know OTh is suprising1 i so dont want it to go! its just getting good! its not fair! i love it and it cant go!

tommygirl887
01-24-2006, 06:36 PM
I guess to the hardcore fans its shocking because a lot have been saying that a few of the episodes this season are the best of the series. I still think there's a little shred of hope that they will decide to keep it.

Jon
01-24-2006, 06:47 PM
No offense to those of OTH or Everwood, but GG (besides 7th Heaven) has consistently done well on the WB. Everwood was good then its ratings dropped, OTH has its core set of fans but that's it. To everyone else in the world, it's just another teen drama. Atleast with GG or even Everwood, it's somdething a little different and not a stereotypical show.

ShannonQT85
01-24-2006, 06:49 PM
wow i didn't see this one coming really. i'm really worried about everwood...i want to see it have another season but if this merge is just not going to allow them to have it, then i would hope they end the show in a decent way rather than leave us hanging with some terrible ending, but in the meantime i'll keep my fingers crossed that they decide to keep it since its the one show i care about in that list. come on wb..(or i guess cw now?) keep everwood in my mind when you make your schedule

AnythingLeyton
01-24-2006, 06:58 PM
Dude, I'm in tears.

And they haven't even made it a real decision yet.

Dammit.

frickangel
01-24-2006, 07:08 PM
This is the scary part, no matter how much you think your favourite is doing well, somehow some*cough*idiot*cough*one at TPTB decides that it isn't worth keeping around. I have no idea why, maybe someone from the production crew had stepped on another's foot or TPTB just decides that the show is too costly and isn't making the moolah they envision.

But anyways, msnbc's predictions:

~Cheers

Ashlyn
01-24-2006, 07:15 PM
I agree, GG has more reason to stay with both its great ratings and critical acclaim, but OTH MUST make it through! :(

Jon
01-24-2006, 07:20 PM
Out of all the shows on both networks GG and that comedy on UPN whatever the one about Chris Rock (I don't watch that network) So I don't know much about it, but those two are the only guarantees, along with wrestling. Everything else will be tossed in the air, though I'm wanting to watch Veronica Mars to see what everyone is talking about with it.

Ashlyn
01-24-2006, 07:22 PM
It's called "Everybody Hates Chris."

OTH man
01-24-2006, 07:22 PM
AHH I NEED OTH!

lets keep faith

Quinton
01-24-2006, 07:23 PM
I must admit I haven't been keeping up with Everwood this season (and certainly much of last) but from what I've been reading this season in particular has been one of the strongest, story-wise. Unfortunately that doesn't translate into ratings and I for one will be sad to see the show dropped.

OTH I would rather see stick around a bit longer as well as GG.

oh and "Everybody Hates Chris" LOVE that show!

tutor_ jess
01-24-2006, 07:23 PM
that's a good idea, but I don't want oth to go.

iceteaiscrazy
01-24-2006, 07:31 PM
GG, SV, and VM are safe. I can breathe easier.

Andrew
01-24-2006, 07:32 PM
I love "Everybody Hates Chris"... although, they're not very consistent with the new episodes...

BTW... what is "CW" supposed to stand for?

OTH man
01-24-2006, 07:36 PM
^^ lol i have NO CLUE im guessin the W from Warner? but C?

Jon
01-24-2006, 07:40 PM
The W as in Warner Bros./WB and the C as in CBS.....

smileygirl
01-24-2006, 07:42 PM
This stinks. I will be so sad if they don't keep One Tree Hill. It's my favorite Wb show.

Andrew
01-24-2006, 07:43 PM
The W as in Warner Bros./WB and the C as in CBS.....

Oooh! Perceptive...

OTH man
01-24-2006, 07:54 PM
^ lol yeah... wait i thought it was UPN not CBS?

Jon
01-24-2006, 08:02 PM
CBS owns UPN. So basically it's CBS "lite"

tommygirl887
01-24-2006, 08:04 PM
I think that GG, Everybody Hates Chris, Veronica Mars and Smallville for sure will get through.

Jon
01-24-2006, 08:05 PM
Smallville I wonder....that show has been going downhill as well. From what has been posted about what the execs from both stations have said, they're cost-cutting. So I would think expensive shows like Smallville and sadly...Everwood will/maybe be cancelled. Everwood is suppose to be very expensive to film.

OTH man
01-24-2006, 08:08 PM
ohh i see abiout upn and cbs.. so maybe cbs will suck and take like vm and more sports on the wc? :hopes:

Quinton
01-24-2006, 08:50 PM
The W as in Warner Bros./WB and the C as in CBS.....Is that conjecture or has it in fact been confirmed?

I've read reports that it stands for Casey-Werner.

We need this cleared up asap! :naughty:

Andrew
01-24-2006, 08:52 PM
The new network will be called The CW — "C" for CBS Corp. and "W" for Warner Bros. — each of which will own half of the new entity and contribute programs, assets and executives to the venture.

They should do that.. any unsuccessful shows on CBS (I don't think they have any though..) should be replaced with VM, GG or another show they want to keep, so then that leaves more space for shows like Everwood, OTH or whatever. Unless they really want to get rid of the shows, and this merger is just an opportune time to get rid of them.

Andrew, I think he was just fooling around, I'm sure he knew I was right with what CW stood for. If not well, I am just confused ;)

Well it's not CBS shows per se, it'll be UPN shows, which is different. UPN and CBS both have a different demographic and target audience. CBS' audience is all about the crime dramas like CSI. UPN is more about comedies, ethnic based shows, and stuff that is off the wall that the actual CBS station would never air.

Now regarding replacing shows, this "merger" is all about restructuring. AKA, they're just cost-cutting and wanting to save money.

its going to take me several years to get used to this once it starts. lol :) I still can't believe that people are saying everwood has better odds of staying than OTH. I mean I am more of Everwood fan so I am totally cool for that, but I thought that WB put a lot more effort into oth stuff you know, there's a ton of merchadise which there isn't with Everwood. In fact, wb contacted me a couple days ago to start selling oth stuff on this site, so I just find it weird that they're talking about x'ing that show.

I hope they keep Everwood - I know they were shown in the video of the announment but when they were listing shows, they didn't list Everwood. I really hope they don't get rid of this show. I will be very very disappointed. Other show they should keep is OTH, Gilmore, Smallville and Veronica Mars. They have all these show. I will be a happy camper =)

Noah
01-25-2006, 12:04 AM
I just don't understand why on earth they are calling the netword the 'CW'. From a marketing standpoint one would think that they would call the network something that was a bit more catchy and snappy. Saying "The CW" is just too awkward. The UPN and the WB were both sinking ships... I'd imagine that the executives wouldn't want to doom the new network right from the start with a crap name.

sethsangel123
01-25-2006, 12:06 AM
i know! i dont see the everwood fans getting out there and supporting thier show! like the OTH fans are doing, they are taking over fanbolt! its incredible!

christy86
01-25-2006, 12:13 AM
They should have left it the WB. Then there catch phrase can be "C(See) The WB"...

I am kinda quite sad because I grew up from 8yrs old on the WB network shows, watching the wayans brothers, the parent hood, brotherly love, Savannah and yes 7th heaven. So upsetting they are merging. I didn't get why they just grab UPNs successful shows and hop them over to the wb network. C the wb!

Yeah, why isn't there any Everwood petitions??? The whole reason why majority of fanbolt members(when fanbolt first started) came for everwoodonline.com or roswell show...:crying:

People are getting upset here because lots of miniority shows are on the wb/upn and now are like :wtf:...this is wrong.

Emma
01-25-2006, 12:16 AM
Yeah it was Roswell and Everwood that gave this site a true kick off with members. It will be really sad to see it go if that happens. I'm betting the lack of everwood support has to do with the fact the show is on hitas at the moment, so a lot of the fans might not even be checking the site for updates. I know the everwood fans... and they're a massively supportive bunch, so I am sure we'll be hearing from them! :)

sethsangel123
01-25-2006, 12:18 AM
i hope so, as we just got everwood back here in aus! and i love it! and i dont wanna see it go away so soon!

Although most of the shows that are coming back are from the WB, the executives are mostly from UPN (since this past few years, UPN has been beating WB in ratings because of "America's Next Top Model" and "Smackdown!")

ETA: Oh... this may sound cynical... but maybe they're just trying to get rid of unneeded inventory :ponder:

Saying "The CW" is just too awkward.

Yeah... now that I think about it, it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Noah
01-25-2006, 01:25 AM
I definitely agree with the getting rid of unneeded inventory. I think that if they play this right, the new network could do MUCH better than WB and UPN were doing on their own. as long as they offer the right combinations of shows and stick to the quality stuff they'll definitely benefit.

frickangel
01-25-2006, 01:55 AM
My guess on the whole 'which series do we pick up' on CW's side is that they have a business formula. Things like production costs, ratings, cast wages, bankability, the future possiblity of it going down the drain and so forth. They also have to take into account whether a specific show can capture more audience than it already is holding in a loyal fanbase. But IMHO, I think the two main points to save a show is the costs and ratings where. each of it would have a margin. Anything falling below the margin or is seemingly mediocre, it gets cut.

I think it's an amazing idea, and it's going to be a great investment for everyone involved. As long as they keep the big shows from the networks, and keep it diverse, they'll do great.
It's too bad that they can't keep all the shows, as that would guarantee them that 48%, but hey, there's only 24 hours in a day, and seven of those.
I'm ok as long as there's a Supernatural and Veronica Mars

I agree, financially it's a great idea, but that won't be much comfort if they take One Tree Hill. :(

I was surprised to hear that One Tree Hill may get cancelled, but I want Everwood to get picked up more than anything.

I've never seen One Tree Hill because it doesn't make its way over to Austria, lol, so I can't say whether considering dropping it or not is a good idea or not.
I'm glad that it's almost certain that Gilmore girls and Veronica Mars stay, because that are 66% of my favourite TV shows.

Well, it looks like 'One Tree Hill' and '7th Heaven' might be canceled. There are unconfirmed reports as well that 'Charmed' might not make it.
