Cool banner, Kayla. :D I love watching these two together. But whenever I watch it with my friend, she makes fun of them because they're girls, and they're kissing each other. Basically, she thinks it's gross. For me, I just see to people in love. I think they're adorable together.

Hello there.
I was a fan of the late, lamented Everwood and although I never posted on Fanbolt back then, I stopped by now and then to visit.
I was introduced to SON by the second episode (I was able to see the first one shortly thereafter), and quickly became a fan of the show, and of Spashley in particular. Gabrielle and Mandy, in addition to their stunning looks, seem to have a genuine chemistry together. And, heck, I'm a sucker for romance.
I'm greatly impressed by the consistent quality of the show's writing, and I like the way they spend the effort to make the supporting characters fully-dimensional instead of leaving them as inane filler, thereby creating tons of potentially-interesting story lines for the future. Also, like my old favorite Everwood, SON deals with real issues with a complete lack of pretense or sensationalism.
Like most Spashley fans, I find it hard at times to figure out who annoys me the most, Madison or Mama Carlin. Since the promos for the new season seem to indicate that Madison is in for some tough sledding now that her meal ticket is hurt and her previous dumpee is (hopefully) not stupid enough to take her back, I'm reserving my major rancor for Mama Carlin and her suffocating self-righteousness. No doubt she will freak out completely when she finds out about Spencer and Ashley. It will be interesting to see how the conflict between she, with her rigid intolerance, and her "just be yourself, Spencer" husband plays out. For Spashley's sake, I hope Daddy Carlin grows a big enough set of gonads to stand up to his raging (and of course massively hypocritical) spouse.
One thing that has always irritated me about TV shows, especially new ones, is that the writers/producers don't seem to believe that a great couple just being together and happy can make for both interesting entertainment and loyal viewers. So they continually throw in conflicts, obstacles, and heartaches for the couple to overcome. I sincerely hope that the controlling mavens of SON don't succumb too blatantly to that temptation. Just the fact that Spashley are two young women should be enough of an obstacle. Don't make them wade through fire every single week. Just let us watch this compelling relationship develop of its own course. A happy Spashley is enough to keep me watching.

Hey Makro, I think I know your Everwood posts from FanForum, no? Anyway brilliantly spoken (er, written). It will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out next season (Which OMG!SQUEE is less than a week away! Woot!).

I'd write more but off to dinner at the moment..

Yes, I was in fact a fairly regular contributor to the Everwood board on FanForum.
I actually find quite a few similarities between Everwood and SON. The quality writing. The multi-dimensional supporting characters. The willingness to address controversial topics in an honest, non-sensationalist way. The school as a main setting. Yet the plotlines make SON almost like Everwood in reverse. The move is rural-to-urban (lily-white to racially diverse); the father is the doting, compassionate one while the mother is the intense, driven professional; the bully is female instead of male; the daughter is the sensitive-but-spunky one; the immediate meeting of soul mates is between two young girls instead of a boy and a girl; etc., etc.
In the case of SON versus Everwood, different is just fine. SON is a very worthy replacement for Everwood in my affections.
And I find Spashley just as compelling and deserving of happiness as Amy/Ephram.
Can't wait until Friday night. The promos look amazing.

Now that Spashley have dodged the VH-1 bullet, it is interesting to speculate under what circumstances Spencer's secret will be discovered by the insufferable Mama Carlin. I see several possibilities:
1) Just to be mean, someone other than Spencer could tell Mama C. directly. The best possibility here would have been Madison telling Glen, who would then run straight to Mama C. and spill the beans. Glen shares many of Mama C's worst qualities, including disgust at the idea of Spencer "turning gay" (it's interesting that the considerate and loyal brother is the one who doesn't share the family DNA). Although in Glen's case he is probably more concerned with how having a gay sister would affect his social status than anything else. After all, it's all about him. And Glen was in fact stupid and arrogant enough to think Madison was just "confused" after his accident and didn't just dump him as soon as his basketball prospects disappeared. Fortunately, she put him straight on that one, so she shouldn't be talking to him much for the time being.
2) Mama C. could inadvertantly overhear a conversation containing the news. For example, that could have been her outside Spencer's door last night instead of Clay. The more people who know something, the less chance there is of it remaining a secret. And quite a few people know about Spashley at this point.
3) Spencer could overcome her fears, with or without pressure from Ashley, and come out to both her parents voluntarily. She could count on whatever support her alcohol-fogged, ineffective father may provide in the face of her mother's meltdown. Maybe he would emerge from his haze long enough to tell Mama C. to get on her broom and fly back to her doctor lover and leave Spencer alone. Yeah, right...
4) Mama C. could barge in on Spencer and Ashley in a compromising position; either kissing or something more.
I'm putting my money on number four. It would give Mama C. the maximum hissy fit potential. I guess we'll know sometime soon.
The irony here is that, for all of Mama C's worrying that her daughter won't end up as the spitting image of her, with her every narrow-minded value imbedded, the fact is she is wasting her time. Hiding behind Spencer's angelic face is a core of steely determination; she is going to love whomever she chooses. Sure, she is reluctant to come out officially. But not because she doesn't know what (and who) she wants. She feels absolutely no shame in loving Ashley. The beaming smile on her face last night when she confessed to Chelsea clearly demonstrated that. She just wants to avoid the family and social hassles she knows are coming for as long as possible. Mama is fighting a losing battle.

As much as I've enjoyed the way SON has depicted the development of the Spashley relationship (I am a die-hard romantic who finds them almost unbearably cute together), I have a Wish List of things I would like to see incorporated into their on-screen romance which would make watching it even more enjoyable.
In compiling this list, I'm going to imagine we're living in a perfect world where a TV show's creative decision-makers are not constrained by network fears of e-mail campaigns, calls to watchdog agencies, and organized sponsor boycotts, but are free to depict a developing romance between two young girls in a way completely on a par with that of a male-female couple (I've never quite understood that whole "don't show anything we don't like or we'll ruin you" trip. I'm more of the "if you don't like what you are seeing, CHANGE THE CHANNEL" school). A naive hope perhaps, but it's my list after all.
Here goes....
1) I think there should be more kisses exchanged. These are two healthy young teens in love. In Spencer's case, it is first love. To my recollection, young love is all about endless kissing, secret glances, eye gazing, and love notes with bad poetry. Yes, I understand Spencer is still in the closet. I also understand that, even if she wasn't, gay PDA's require a certain discretion. But young love finds a way. These two always look so happy to be kissing each other. Let them do more of it.
2) Have you noticed that most of Spashley's kisses have seen their faces obscured (by their hair, darkness, or Ashley's hand), or have been rudely interrupted, or both? Meanwhile Glen and Madison can maul each other in the restroom, and Spencer and Aiden can make out for about an hour in the park? I'm afraid I know why this has been the case, but to me it diminishes a wonderful relationship. Stop that!
3) Once a new relationship is consummated in a mutually-pleasurable way, and there is every reason to believe this was the case here, there is usually an explosion of passion. Kisses which were tender and romantic before are joined by major lip locks and the feeling that you can't keep your hands off each other; not to mention a desire for a return to the bedroom as soon and as often as possible. Admittedly, in Spashley's case there are several limiting factors; Spencer not being out, their age, a place to be together without fear of parental interference, etc. But it seems to me they are not being allowed to show any passion for each other whatsoever (love yes, passion no). Their kisses involve no embracing (and this from a couple who are fantastic huggers). There are no steamy glances. Even in the charming "morning after" scene Spencer looked like she had just come out of the hair and make-up trailer, not like she had just spent the night getting sweaty with Ash. Hey, I'm not looking to see them soaping each other in the shower or tumbling naked onto the sheets, but these are teenagers in love! A few steamy looks would be in order, and even young lovers put their arms around each other when they kiss.
4) I have a weakness for dancing scenes. Watching a couple whom I like slow dance just makes me smile. There is almost no better way (at least on network TV) to portray the intimacy and depth of feeling between two young lovers than watching them get lost in each other on the dance floor. And a faster dance can be filled with sensuality also. So far we've been treated to about three seconds of Spashley dancing, and it resembled two elderly spinster aunts dancing at a family reunion; they looked happy, but it wasn't generating any heat. Let's do better!
5) It seems to me we should have reached the Terms Of Endearment stage by now. So far, it has been 'Spencer" and "Ash". What about "honey" or "baby" or whatever? How many young couples in love only call each other by their names? Perhaps when Spencer comes out.... And it's the same with handholding. Perhaps when Spencer comes out....
6) Okay, it's definitely time for these two to acknowledge the obvious; they are in love. It's time for them to tell each other. Scary words, yes, but it is time.
The scene in the petting zoo the other night is a good example of where my wish list could have been applied to make the scene more romantic. Why not show Spencer and Ashley walking into the zoo from their car holding hands and looking at each other in "that" way? And after their brief affectionate kiss, why not show their look change to one of passion, have them put their arms around each other, and at least start toward a serious liplock before they are interrupted. I mean, why did they go to such a private place? Just to drink beer? I hope not! They went there to make out, just like Aiden and Kyla did. All of that would have added maybe thirty seconds to the scene. I would gladly have sacrificed thirty seconds from Glen and Madison's wrestling match or Mama C's marathon dinner prayer in order to see it.
These two comprise one of the most endearing TV couples in recent memory. I just "wish" we could see all or most of the above. It would make watching them even more of a pleasure. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

So Mama Carlin thinks that a few days of exposure to her Ohio BFF (and Mama C. clone) Debbie is going to distract Spencer from spending all of her time with Ashley? Yet another example of Mama C.completely mis-judging her daughter. I guess that isn't exactly surprising since Mama C. is perhaps the worst judge of character on TV. She loved Madison; she loved Debbie; she thought Spencer was in good hands with Kelley; she thinks her pill-popping, promiscuous jock son is wonderful, and of course every son of her church-going sorority members is an altar boy in every way. Naturally she hates Ashley who, despite her being the spawn of the devil in Mama's eyes, is actually a pretty good person despite her stark upbringing; and the Ashley/Spencer relationship is warm, loving, and monogamous.
I wanted to throw up watching Mama ooze non-judgemental motherly benevolence on Clay ("whatever you choose to do, we'll support you because we love you"). Not because he doesn't deserve such consideration, but because what she really meant was "we'll support you as long as you don't do something I disapprove of". I wonder if she'll be as supportive when she finds out her perfect son has knocked up his girlfriend. We certainly know Spencer has a better chance of winning the lottery than receiving the same motherly love when she comes out.
Mama has now reached the stage of direct rudeness to Ashley. Did you see her elude Ashley's hand with the snacks she brought to Spencer's room? Then hint broadly that Ashley should leave (presumably so Debbie could be free to have her "positive" influence on Spencer unencumbered)? And of course when Spencer threw Debbie out Mama was sure it was Ashley's fault (just like it was her fault Spencer caught the elbow of the gay-baiting asshole last week). Did you see the look on Mama's face when Spencer told her it was Debbie who had crapped on Ashley? She looked like she had swallowed vinegar.
Although there wasn't a lot of Spashley last night, there were two significant moments. The first was when Spencer, who is getting more feisty by the minute (she threw Debbie out!), let Mama know flat out she was on to her little anti-Ashley schemes and that she wasn't going to back down no matter what Mama thought. Way to go, girl! Mama looked like she had been clocked by an axe handle.
The second highlight was yet another sweet, heartfelt apology from one girlfriend to the other. These two are surely the best apologizers ever. The only disappointment there was when Spencer said "no, you're my friend". I would like to have seen her say "girlfriend" at least.
There was also a nice kiss, but it was partially ruined when it was clear Spencer wasn't thrilled about being kissed in front of Debbie.
It looks from the previews like next week it's all going to hit the fan. And it appears that Mama C. will learn the big news by catching Ashley and Spencer in some sort of compromising position. Her stunned "oh, my God!", along with Spencer's subsequent appearance (in an earlier preview) in her robe, would lead me to believe she catches them in the act. I can only hope so. Not out of prurient interest, but because Mama deserves to actually see her worst nightmare come true; not to find out the news in a mundane "Mom, Dad, I'm gay" conversation.
I found it quite interesting that Ashley warned Spencer about "gay de-tox" camps. I actually considered that a possible scenario, at least for a showdown between Mama and Papa C. Now that it has been mentioned, it is probably less-than-likely. What does intrigue me is the timing of Glen's call from the slammer and what effect that may have on Mama's inevitable snit fit. We'll soon see. It ought to be memorable.

Alone in a motel room and the only embracing is between Spencer and the snack display? The two on a bed and the only contact sport is, yet again, Hairplay? Safely home and happy knowing Dad is on their side and no kiss? Not even any handholding in the car? This is getting RIDICULOUS!! This network paranoia about Spashley showing physical affection for each other while hetero couples are allowed to suck face and grope themselves silly has gotten beyond annoying. It has started to turn me off the show. And I'm straight. It's demeaning to their relationship and insulting to fans. GRRRRR!!!!

I just realised I totally missed the finale. What happened?! I saw the preview where Spencer was going over to Ashley's but forgot to watch apparently... Did it end badly?

No, Spence called her on the phone and told her to open the door and she came in only wearing a trench coat and they kissed. It was great.

And Paula went to Gay Pride :D
