The N, the nighttime network for teens, begins production on season two of the teen favorite and critically acclaimed series South of Nowhere. Production of 13 new half-hour episodes from veteran writer-creator-producer Tom Lynch (Romeo!, Scout’s Safari, Caitlin’s Way), will begin shooting Monday, May 15 on location in Los Angeles. The second season of the original series will premiere on The N October 2006.
Season two of South of Nowhere, which was recently nominated for a GLAAD Award for Best Dramatic Series, will continue to deal with complex story lines as the series delves deeper into the family life of the Carlins’ multi-racial home. New issues revolving around identity and other life changing events such as addiction, adoption, being outed, death, racial friction, hate crimes and the arrival of a long lost sibling will all collide and shake the foundation of their everyday lives. How the Carlins choose to confront and accept their biggest hardships will define what and who they are as a family.
“South of Nowhere will continue to portray the authenticity of teens’ lives and the struggles that many face with self discovery and self acceptance,” said Amy Friedman, Senior Vice President, Development / Creative Director, Nickelodeon Digital Television.
The second season of the acclaimed series will address lingering issues left behind from season one. Plot lines include Ashley’s relationship with Spencer and the rift it has caused between Spencer and her mother Paula, as well as Clay’s struggle with his personal and racial identity after finding his biological mother.
“In the first season, millions of fans around the country were captivated by the realistic situations confronting our South of Nowhere characters,” said Lynch. “It’s the viewers’ devotion to our storylines that inspires us to be bold, take risks and go deeper into the truth about the lives of teens today. And we promise we won’t disappoint!”

FAMILY DRAMA, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND IDENTITY STRUGGLES CONTINUE IN SEASON TWO OF THE N’S ACCLAIMED TEEN DRAMA, SOUTH OF NOWHERE,
PREMIERING FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
The N Rolls Out 13 New Half-Hour Episodes, From Creator Tom Lynch,
Kicking Off With A One-Hour Special At 9:00 PM (ET) Immediately Following
The Premiere Of Degrassi: The Next Generation At 8:00 PM (ET)
NEW YORK, NY September 6, 2006 – Acceptance, unconditional love and identity struggles take center stage as the Carlin family continue on their journey of honesty and self-discovery in the fast-paced City of Angels. South of Nowhere, The N’s original teen drama from The Tom Lynch Co., returns with a second season of 13 new half-hour episodes kicking off with a one-hour special on Friday, September 29 at 9:00 p.m. (ET), immediately following the one-hour premiere of Degrassi: The Next Generation at 8:00 p.m. (ET).
“We are proud to present season two of South of Nowhere, a series whose authentic treatment and portrayal of the complex issues of identity continue to engage and entertain our audience,” said Sarah Tomassi Lindman, Vice President, Production and Programming, The N. “We hope teens will continue to enjoy the drama as they follow each character’s personal struggle to define who they are and who they want to be.”
“We really wanted this series to resonate with teens on an emotional level, so obviously I’m thrilled with the incredible audience response to season one,” said creator-executive producer Tom Lynch. “In season two, we’ll continue to explore provocative issues through realistic characters and rich storylines that accurately reflect the complicated challenges facing young people today. So I’d like to say to all our fans: Prepare for season two – It’s going to rock your world!”
Emotions run deep and nothing is off limits, including ex-boyfriends, on the premiere episode of South of Nowhere. Spencer (Gabrielle Christian) accepts her sexuality, falls in love for the first time and seeks acceptance, understanding and reconciliation from her family, while her mother Paula does everything in her power to divert Spencer’s infatuation with Ashley including bringing her best friend Debbie to Los Angeles from Ohio.
Ashley (Mandy Musgrave) copes with the sudden death of her father and the arrival of her long lost sister, Kyla (played by newcomer Eileen Boylan). Ashley and Kyla will have to live as sisters in the same home, go to the same school and share their lives in order to inherit their father’s multi-million dollar estate. But when Kyla and Aiden (Matthew Cohen) strike up a romance, can Ashley truly look the other way?
The Carlin boys will face their own world of difficulty. After re-connecting with his birth mother, adopted son Clay (Danso Gordon) begins to question his relationships with his family, friends and girlfriend Chelsea (Aasha Davis). Glen’s (Chris Hunter) life begins to spiral out of control when he sustains a basketball injury that will keep him on the bench permanently and ends his chances for a scholarship to Duke University. Realizing that Glen’s basketball career looks glum, girlfriend Madison (Valery Ortiz) calls it quits and quickly tries to reconcile with past love Aiden. Glen will face his biggest challenge yet when a growing addiction to pain killers gets out of control and he confronts an uncertain future in Los Angeles.
South of Nowhere is a fictional story about a contemporary American family and their multi-faceted journey of self-discovery. Set in Los Angeles, the series chronicles the five members of the Carlin family as they try to define themselves and make sense of their lives while they undergo a huge transition -- moving from a small town in Ohio to the big city of Los Angeles. The Carlins find they are unprepared for the fast-paced, metropolitan environment and the overcrowded, “anything goes” L.A. public school the family’s three teenagers attend. The family is at the heart of the series and while their characters are unique, they reflect many American families today -- bound by their evolving identity and their close relationships.
Tom Lynch, founder and CEO of The Tom Lynch Company, began his career as a rock-n-roll producer on Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert and as creator-writer-producer of Night Tracks. With an extensive roster of television hits to his credit—including Caitlin’s Way, Just Deal, Skate, Galidor: Defenders of the Outer Dimension, and the Emmy-nominated Scout’s Safari, which was set and filmed on location in South Africa—Lynch rediscovered his musical roots with the hip-hop sitcom Romeo!, starring rap artist Master P and his real-life son, Romeo, and Class of 3000, a co-production with André Benjamin of OutKast, which debuts this fall. Lynch and the company that bears his name continue to create groundbreaking, uniquely fresh, innovative shows that resonate with audiences around the world by “illuminating the magic of the human experience”—celebrating all the drama, the humor, the quirkiness and reality of human beings’ lives.

The article above, which describes some of the happenings in Season 2, says that Mama Carlin, in an attempt to divert Spencer from her "infatuation" with Ashley, import's Spencer's best friend Debbie from Ohio. I wonder if this Debbie is the one with the IM name "sportygrrll" with whom Spencer is conversing at the beginning of "Girl's Guide To Dating". I can't see Spencer having that conversation with anyone other than her best friend. Wouldn't it be the ultimate irony for Mama Carlin to put her hopes for heterosexuality for her daughter in the hands of a nice, safe, Ohio friend who turns out to be gay also?
One can only hope.
That would be worth a chuckle.
